ENJOY FULL-SIZE PICKUP CAPABILITIES IN MIDSIZE COLORADO

February 20, 2019 By Nitish S. Rele

Ever since its return in 2015 after a 7-year hiatus, the Chevy Colorado has taken on some tough competition. But, it carries on. For 2019, this midsize pickup continues to break new ground, drawing in a loyal following, as well as several new owners.

Available in at least three varying power trains (4-cylinder 2.5 and 2.8), our four-wheel drive Z71 trim was equipped with a 3.6-liter V-6 engine putting out 308 horsepower. Step on the gas and the Colorado may surprise you as it takes off the line. Power reaches all the wheels via a crisp-shifting 8-speed auto gear box.

An independent coil-over-shock front and solid axle rear suspension soaks hurdles with skill, sure-footedness and confidence. The electric power-assist rack-and-pinion steering is direct and precise. Sound-damping materials hold wind and road noise to a minimum, guaranteeing silence and poise at highway speeds. And, if you need to haul a sailboat or another car, tow capacity is an astounding 7,000 pounds. Our crew cab version was equipped with a 5’ 2” short bed that had 13 tie-downs.

2018 Chevrolet Colorado Z71

Step inside the lap of luxury to be impressed by aluminum trim on the large and eligible instrument cluster of speedometer and tachometer. The tilt/telescopic steering column will be welcomed by drivers of all statures. The 8-inch color touchscreen for audio, navigation and Intellilink readings is easy and clear to read. Underneath, climate control buttons are logically placed and straightforward to use.

The interior is quite spacious with six-way power driver and four-way front-passenger heated seats. In fact, there is plenty of space for children, and even 6-foot adults, for a long journey in the folding second-row bench.

Storage spaces are abundant with a good-size center console, cellphone tray, door pockets and the usual cup holders. The innovative lift-and-lower locking tailgate in the Colorado using an internal torsion bar (effortless to raise and even better, lowers slowly) is most likely to be incorporated into other pickups.

This being an off-road prowess truck, a rotary dial offers the option of 2WD, Auto, 4WD Hi and 4WD Lo modes. Of course, dual front and side airbags, side curtain airbag, four-wheel antilock brakes, stability and traction control, rearview camera, remote keyless entry and vehicle start, driver selectable, rear-park assist, hill descent control, daytime running lights and tire pressure monitoring system come at no cost.

So, why should you buy the Colorado? Well, you will be hard-pressed to find a full-size pickup that delivers notable cargo and towing capability, and creditable fuel efficiency. At the same time, you enjoy a decent and sophisticated ride.

ALL-NEW LEXUS UX PURPOSE-BUILT FOR THE URBAN BUYER

February 20, 2019 By Nitish S. Rele

Looking to buy a small but affordable crossover designed for the modern urban explorer? The all-new 2019 Lexus UX could be just the vehicle for you.

This urban-centric ride in the fastest-growing compact SUV segment is available in two trims: the front-wheel drive UX200 with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine putting out 169 horsepower; or the all-wheel drive UX250h gas/electric hybrid with a 2.0-liter developing a total of 181 hp. The former is mated to a 10-speed direct-shift auto gear box, and the latter gets a continuous variable transmission. A 34.2-foot turning circle means maneuvering sharp curves or making a U-turn is a breeze.

The UX250h employs a four-cylinder gas engine, two electric motors and a 216-volt nickel-metal hydride battery. At higher speeds, power comes primarily from the gasoline engine. During deceleration and braking, the vehicle uses regenerative braking to apply much of the wasted energy toward recharging the hybrid battery.

Standard bi-LED headlights and daytime running lights flank a massive three-dimensional mesh spindle grille to give the UX a muscular stance. Attention to detail is apparent in the cabin with its robust three-spoke steering wheel, which turns effortlessly. The driver and front-row passenger get eight-way power seats, while the rear 60/40 seat folds for storage if needed. As summer approaches, the dual auto a/c will keep the front-row occupants cool.

Tech-driven aficionados will appreciate the six speakers, four USB ports, wireless phone charger, and Amazon Alexa and Apple CarPlay integration. A mouse-like Remote Touch enables the driver to toggle navigation, climate, audio and phone controls, which are displayed on a 7-inch or the optional 10.3-inch screen, next to the familiar analog clock. Passenger volume is at 90.4 and trunk space at 21.7 cubic feet, which is laudable for a compact SUV.

Add $2,000 if you would like the sporty F Sport trim, which includes a sport-tuned suspension, perforated leather shifter and heated steering wheel, F Sport grille, front/rear bumpers, 8-inch display screen, and more.

Apart from the standard airbag/stability control features, the Lexus Safety Sense + 2.0 fetches you a pre-collision system that detects pedestrians, lane departure alert and lane tracing assist, dynamic cruise control and intelligent high beams at no cost.

Starting at $32,000 for the UX200 and $34,000 for the UX250h, this Urban + X-over (crossover) is a purposeful vehicle with no compromises. Taking into consideration its Lexus label, it truly is great value for the money. This immensely pleasant and rewarding UX is a welcome addition to the lineup of the luxury division.

SPORTY FORD ESCAPE OFFERS A CAR-LIKE RIDE!

January 16, 2019 By Nitish S. Rele

What makes the Ford Escape stand out in a crowd? In our eyes, it’s the varying power trains that the compact crossover, now in its 19th year, has to offer. That’s something you don’t see in other brands that fall in the same segment.

Though Ford nixed the six-cylinder and hybrid versions sometime back, there are still three four-cylinder engines to choose in this hot-seller: 2.5 liter with 168 horsepower; 1.5-liter turbo with 179 hp; or the potent 2.0-liter EcoBoost pumping out a respectable 240 hp. EcoBoost is essentially twin turbochargers and a smaller-displacement engine working in tandem with gasoline direct injection to produce a powerful but fuel-efficient engine. Getting power to the ground is a sprightly 6-speed automatic transmission. An independent front MacPherson strut and rear control blade suspension isolate occupants from road noise and imperfections to ensure a safe jaunt. Providing superb on-center feel to the driver is an electric power system.

Available in front-wheel or all-wheel drive, the sleek and attractive Escape, with active grill shutters, is roomier than ever before. Ambient lights welcome you as you step into the spacious cabin with its fine cloth or leather seats. Two instrument binnacles house round gauges for speedometer and tachometer with a centered trip computer, fuel and temperature readings. Standard are six-way driver and four-way manual front passenger seats, though with a top-level trim, you can get a 10-way power driver seat. Sync3, which accesses audio, telephone, navigation controls via a voice command, 4.2- or 8-inch touchscreen tap or button click, is simple to use. Storage areas are a dime a dozen: overhead sunglass holder, generous front center console with armrest and a 60/40 second-row seat that folds flat. Even if you keep the seat upright, you get 34 cubic feet of cargo space to store bags for a weekend trip. Place the second seat down and that opens up 68 cubic feet, more than enough for several pieces of luggage, golf clubs, picnic basket, and much more. The base model comes with a single-zone a/c and tilt/telescopic steering column, both of which are manual; power windows/door locks, and, an AM/FM audio system with six speakers.

A standard driver knee airbag is welcome in the Escape, a feature not found consistently in its segment. Also built in are dual front and side airbags, side curtain airbag, four-wheel antilock brakes, AdvanceTrac with electronic stability and traction control, rearview camera, tire pressure monitoring system and daytime running lights.

Slotted below the Ford Edge and above the EcoSport, the eye-catching Escape (base-priced at $24,105 for the S and peaking at $32,620 for the top trim Titanium) displays superb agility and spirited character to result in a car-like drive. Plus, a thought-out interior and decent gas mileage (EPA estimates are 20 mpg city and 30 mpg highway) will give its nearest contender a run for the money. Potential compact SUV buyers may want to give the Escape some serious consideration.

OVERHAULED 2019 CHEVY SILVERADO IS THE PERFECT PICKUP!

January 16, 2019 By Nitish S. Rele

The competition among pickups is fierce, like in the SUV segment, but the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 keeps on trudging ahead. For 2019, the popular pickup has been totally revamped. Where do we begin? The list is endless. There’s the wheelbase, which sees an uptick of 3.9 inches. So does the length increase by 1.6 inches. Available as a 5’ 8” or 6’.6” box, there are now 12 fixed tie-downs that can withstand 500-pound weight, which is twice the capacity of the 2018 model.

Engine choices? There are several that you can pick to your liking; such as a 2.7-liter 4 turbo or the 3.0-liter 6 turbodiesel. Or, opt for the high-end LTZ crew cab version, our test drive, which comes with a 6.2-liter V-8 engine cranking out 420 horsepower @ 5600 rpm. The potent engine enables the massive truck weighing 5,090 pounds to effectively and equally traverse rugged terrain, as well as tackle peak-hour traffic on city roads. The 10-speed auto gear box is smooth and efficient so you can save at the gas station. Also lending a further hand toward that effort is a Dynamic Fuel Management system, which essentially disengages half of the cylinders at a steady pace or at slower speeds. And, if you need to haul a sailboat or another car for that matter, tow capacity is an astounding 12,200 pounds.

The 88-pound lighter, fully boxed steel frame of the Silverado touts the already robust appearance of the Silverado. A crystal-clear six-gauge instrument cluster, easy-to-use climate and entertainment controls, and of course comfortable seats greet the driver and occupants. Hands-free navigation, phone and audio controls are within easy reach, thanks to an ample 8-inch color touchscreen. The huge interior offers plenty of storage space, including under-floor of the 60/40 rear seat. That doesn’t count the glovebox; no, make those two gloveboxes, stacked atop the other. Rear-seat passengers are in for a treat, of sorts; their legroom is up by 3 inches. The center console bin can consume a laptop, as well as other personal belongings. Other no-cost goodies are a tilt/telescopic steering wheel, dual auto a/c and a six-speaker audio system.

Fear not about your safety, since the Silverado comes with dual front and side airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, stability and traction control, trailer sway control, hill start assist, rearview camera, remote keyless entry, tire pressure monitoring system and daytime running lights, all at no extra cost to the buyer.

This splendid practical ride boasts a powerful performance, imposing tow and cargo capacity, and a cavernous cabin. As we mentioned at the outset, despite facing tough rivalry, the 2019 overhaul makes the Silverado a nearly impeccable pickup.

REDESIGNED 2019 TOYOTA RAV4 SEATS FIVE IN COMFORT

December 19, 2018 By Nitish S. Rele

Since it debuted in 1996, the RAV4 has stood the test of time delivering a civilized and enjoyable ride. Of course, never to rest on its laurels, Toyota has totally overhauled its best-selling vehicle in the United States for 2019.

Under the hood of the compact SUV resides a 2.5-liter inline-4-cylinder engine that doles out an adequate 203 horsepower. That 6-speed auto gear box, a mainstay for all these years? It is history and now replaced by an 8-speed for even, seamless shifts and substantial fuel savings.

The independent MacPherson strut front and double-wishbone rear suspension does a particularly good job of soaking bumps and potholes with skill and sure-footedness in this front-wheel or all-wheel-drive ride.

Also, the good ole column-mounted steering is now a thing of the past and has been swapped with a rack-mounted system. This makes it almost effortless to steer the vehicle at higher speeds or pull confidently into a spot in the parking lot at your grocery store. In short, you get a firm on-center feel.

Though no speed demon by any means, brakes are potent, fade-resistant and have a strong, assuring pedal touch. Want to save on gas? Well, switch on to eco from normal mode. And, look for a RAV4 hybrid (219 hp) in March, we are told.

Sporting a rakish, brawnier stance with a low roofline, the bold fascia shows off multi-LED headlights with chrome bezels and LED daytime running lights. Essentially, wheelbase sees an uptick translating into more head, leg and shoulder room.

It’s not just top-notch, but also a well thought-out and elegant cabin with fine materials and craftsmanship. Take for example the touches of brushed metallic silver finish as you slide behind the three-spoke leather tilt/telescopic steering wheel.

And, there is ample space for the tots, as well as sufficient freedom for the 6-footers, too. Fold the 60/40-split second row seat down and you get substantial cargo space. The six-way adjustable driver and four-way front passenger seats are comfortable and supportive.

We counted eight total cup/bottle holders, open bin atop the glove box, a sizeable center console, and more for storage. It is optional, but if you like airiness in a ride, go for the panoramic sunroof, a first for the RAV4.

Dual front and side airbags, side curtain airbag and driver knee airbag are standard along with side-impact door beams, four-wheel antilock brakes, electronic brake distribution and brake assist, vehicle stability and traction control, and rearview camera. Also included at no cost is Toyota Safety Sense 2.0.

If you need to seat five in comfort in a roomy and safe vehicle, equipped with a responsive power train, the RAV4 should be at the top of your list. Offered in LE, Adventure (this one’s for all you off-roaders who truly like to go places!), XLE, XLE Premium and Limited trims, the hot-seller is priced just right.

Besides, the superb ride comes with Toyota’s solid reputation for reliability and durability.

GO ANY ROAD, ANYTIME, ANYWHERE IN 2019 FORD EXPLORER

December 19, 2018 By Nitish S. Rele

Best-selling three-row SUV in America? The Ford Explorer, you bet. Available as a front-wheel or all-wheel drive, the Explorer is offered as a 3.5-liter V-6 (290 horsepower); 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 (365 hp); or the 2.3-liter, 4-cylinder turbo (280 hp). As you can see, that’s plenty of choices to “explore” the horizon.

But, the crisp-shifting 6-speed auto is still the only transmission. In fact, for a vehicle that weighs over 4,500 pounds, this Ford moves with remarkable agility and sure-footedness. Some of the credit goes to the MacPherson strut front and independent multilink rear suspension.

Indeed, the Explorer delivers a civilized and composed ride with impressive handling, crisp steering and superb balance. For an excellent on-center response, the SUV is equipped with the electric power steering, making it effortless to dodge sharp and sudden turns on the road.

How come it is so quiet in the cabin at highway speeds? We wondered. That can be attributed to low noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels. If you are looking to haul a small boat to the beach during those warm months, then count on a 5,000-pound tow capacity. And, for that trip up north this winter, you can securely select ‘snow’; other modes are normal, mud and sand.

The Explorer sports a robust but pleasing-to-the-eye appearance, thanks to LED headlights that surround a distinct grille with satin chrome finish. But, what we find even more appealing is the EXPLORER embossed in the lift gate applique. It truly stands out.

We found the interior to be good-looking with plenty of comforts and stylish enhancements, from real wood and aluminum appliques to Nirvana leather, in the Platinum trim. Though manual, the robust tilt/telescopic steering column in the base trim is functional.

Need to access the third-row 50/50 seat? That should be trouble-free with the seatback moving forward for stress-free ingress/egress. Well-placed cubbies are plentiful, plus you have the hefty center console to store personal items out of sight.

No one can quibble about the 4.2-inch touch screen, which displays audio, phone and navigation controls. It is bright and crystal-clear to read and operate. We liked the especially large, centered volume knob in the center stack.

Basic safety features include dual front and side airbags, side curtain airbag for all rows, front-passenger knee airbag, four-wheel antilock brakes, electronic stability and traction control, rearview camera, trailer sway control, antiskid system with rollover sensors and a blind spot monitor.

Any road, anytime, anywhere. That’s how the Detroit carmaker has summed up the Explorer in the past. Whether you are testing its off-road prowess or on-road capability, this best-seller has you covered.

An accommodating cabin, athletic looks, and array of power trains and models (base, XLT, Limited, Sport, Platinum) are further incentive to sign on the dotted line.

‘TRAVERSE’ AND ENJOY THE LANDSCAPE IN THIS CHEVY CROSSOVER

December 19, 2018 By Nitish S. Rele

Numerous three-row SUVs compete vigorously in the market, but among the standouts is the Chevrolet Traverse, which went through a major overhaul this year. It’s like the rebirth of an all-new vehicle, with a total revamping inside and out.

Sharing its design with the Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia, the body-frame integral structure of the Traverse will boost the confidence of any driver. Lighter by 400 pounds with a 3-inch legroom boost for second-row passengers (from previous model), it is equipped with a 3.6-liter V-6 engine putting out a healthy 310 horsepower. That is plenty of clout to propel this 4,362-pound SUV toward its destination briskly on challenging roads.

Power routed through the crisp-shifting 9-speed auto gear box delivers adequate performance. Standard active noise cancellation isolates occupants from road sound and imperfections.

Available as front-wheel or all-wheel drive, the Traverse comes in base L, LS, LT Cloth, LT Leather, RS, Premier and High Country seating seven or eight passengers.

Of course, it’s in the passenger/cargo department that the Traverse truly shines. Have a seat up front in the muscularly-styled SUV and you will notice that the center stack offers MyLink with a 7-inch color touch screen for hands-free phone and audio. Underneath the infotainment system are large illuminated climate control knobs. The instrument cluster of two gauge binnacles hosting readings for speedometer, tachometer, water temp, battery and fuel, as well as a driver information center, is simple but clear.

Thanks to tri-zone auto a/c, the driver and all passengers can control their own individual temperature settings. The 60/40 second-row and 50/50 third-row seats can be folded via a lever. That opens up 98.2 cubic feet of storage area. Simply put, throw in a stroller, numerous pieces of luggage, backpack, ice chest, cooler, etc., into the cargo hold and the Traverse laps it all up.

The four-spoke robust steering wheel, which offers controls for audio, phone and cruise, has a robust look and feel to it. Providing eye candy is wood sprinkled on the front center console around cup holders and doors in certain trims. And, during those occasional rainy days, umbrella holders in the front doors will come in quite handy.

Dual front and side airbags, side curtain airbag for both rows, front center airbag, four-wheel antilock brakes with brake assist, antiskid system, stability and traction control, remote vehicle start, rearview camera, hill start assist, tire pressure monitoring system and daytime running lights are standard.

Go ahead and ‘Traverse’ the landscape in this Chevy crossover. There is abundant power to ensure a quick but silent and smooth ride, with superb handling and cornering balance. A solid chassis and exceptional people- and cargo-hauling capabilities in this nearly full-size SUV will serve the needs of large households quite well.

WHAT’S NEW FOR 2019 FROM AUTOMAKERS?

December 12, 2018 By Nitish S. Rele

Some have been around forever, some not quite so, many will be around for decades, and quite a few undergo major modifications. That’s the auto industry for you. Here’s a peek at the noticeable changes in vehicles for 2019:

HONDA: The Insight is back, a hybrid that can fetch up to 55 mpg while base-priced at just $22,830, and it does look far better than its predecessor – almost a carbon copy of the Civic. Also making a return, after 16 years though, is the Passport slotted between the compact CR-V and the larger Pilot. It will get a sole standard 3.5-liter V6 with 280 horsepower, mated to a fresh nine-speed auto gearbox.

2019 Acura RDX

ACURA: With crossover vehicles in huge demand, Acura saw it fit to redesign the 2019 RDX inside and out. It now sits on a new platform, powertrain (2.0-liter inline-4-cylinder engine putting out 272 hp and a roomier and always expected tech-savvy cabin. Lest we forget, the 10-speed auto transmission. It also acquires Acura’s new touchpad user interface.GMC: Hardcore pickup owners, your poised ride is here. The Sierra 1500 pickup has been totally redesigned with an all-new 3.0-liter diesel 6-cylinder engine. It’s also larger, longer and lighter (360 pounds) than the previous version and comes in six engine/transmission combos. This utilitarian workhorse boasts not just generous cargo and tow capacity but also outstanding performance, marvelous ride and an upscale, gargantuan interior.

2019 Chevy Silverado

CHEVROLET: Amid tough competition in the pickup market comes an overhauled Silverado 1500 4WD with a wheelbase stretched by 3.9 and length by 1.6 inches. Rear seat legroom gets a 3-inch boost. And, the truck is lighter by 450 pounds from the previous model. And, it comes with a varied choice of power trains, abundant passenger room and incredible tow/haul capabilities. What more can a pickup shopper ask for in a work ride?

NISSAN: The Altima receives a major exterior and interior design change, two all-new engines and for the first time ever, an all-wheel-drive power train on a Nissan sedan in America. This for a ride that was introduced in 1993. Base-priced at $23,750, the Altima has proved to be a huge success story. For 2019, the Japanese carmaker has also refreshed the Maxima sedan and the Murano crossover.

2019 Jaguar I-Pace

JAGUAR: It’s stacking up awards by the dozens. That’s the all-electric I-PACE, which looks to directly compete with Tesla. Priced at $69,500, the SUV with a 90kWh battery delivers a range of about 230 miles on a full charge. Zero to 60 is achieved in just 4.5 seconds with a top speed of 124 mph. Not bad at all.

KIA: After a one-year hiatus, the restyled K900 returns with a 3.3-liter V-6 engine pumping 365 hp. The Korean carmaker’s rear-wheel-drive premium flagship boasts a cabin as top-notch and upscale as any of its German competitors. Also undergoing a styling change is the compact Forte, now longer by 3 inches, opening up plenty of room for occupants. Not only is the gas-sipper (EPA 34 mpg city) fun, lively and well-balanced, but also inexpensive at around $20,000.

2019 Hyundai Santa Fe

HYUNDAI: Just so there is no confusion, the Santa Fe Sport model is out. From 2019 onward, all you have is a two-row, five-passenger Santa Fe offered in both front-wheel and all-wheel drive. And, it will be a while before the three-row Santa Fe XL hits the market. The Veloster hatchback 2.0-liter engine gains horsepower and a redesign. Joining the Hyundai lineup is an all-new Kona subcompact SUV with 1.6- and 2.0-liter engines.

CADILLAC: The all-new XT4 features a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine putting out 237 hp while mated to a 9-speed auto gearbox. Available in front- and all-wheel drive, it’s priced just right starting at $35,790. That is economical and attractive for even an entry-level luxury SUV Caddy like the XT4.

FORD: After eight years, the Ranger is back! The midsize pickup will be offered in at least three trims and two body styles, but will share one power train: 2.3-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine developing 270 hp and coupled to a 10-speed gear box. Also revamped are the Edge SUV and the best-selling F-150 pickup.

LEXUS: Lexus has introduced the UX in the fastest-growing compact SUV segment. The urban-centric ride is available in two trims: the front-wheel-drive UX200 with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine (169 hp) or the AWD UX250h gas/electric hybrid with a 2.0-liter (181 hp). This Urban + X-over (crossover) is a purposeful vehicle with no compromises! Also, an F Sport joins the midsize ES sedan lineup.

2019 Subaru Ascent

SUBARU: Meet an all-new family hauler that has replaced the long-forgotten Tribeca. The aptly-named Ascent is equipped with a 2.4-liter horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine producing a healthy 260 hp. The seven-seater will definitely give the Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot and Mazda CX-9 a run for the money. Subaru also has revamped its smaller Forester SUV.

LINCOLN: Remember the midsize luxury MKX? Well, it’s been replaced by the Nautilus with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine (245 hp) or the 2.7-liter turbo V-6 (335 hp), which was offered in the MKX. Gorgeous to the eye inside and out, the SUV boasts nippy acceleration and excellent handling.

RAM: The Ram 1500 pickup has gone through a major transformation. Sales are nationally up 9 percent, year-after-year basis. The pickup, now longer, wider and offering the largest cabin in the segment, is loaded with tech goodies. Engineers at the recent Miami Auto Show praised its enhanced fuel economy and tow/haul increase of 20 percent. They claim the Ram is a “no-compromise truck.” We agree.

TOYOTA: The best-selling car nameplate in the world gets a new hatchback with a 2.0-liter inline-4 cylinder (168 hp). Millennials will dig the look and feel of this hip Corolla. Also totally restyled is the RAV4, though Toyota has retained the 2.5-liter DOHC inline-4-cylinder engine (205 hp). Off-roading is now a real possibility in this roomy and secure ride.

BMW: The 8 Series returns to the U.S. after two decades. Under the hood of the all-wheel-drive car resides a 4.4-liter TwinPower turbo V8 engine delivering an astounding 523 hp. Base price? Just $111,900! The BMX X3, X4 and X5 undergo noticeable alterations.

2019 VW Arteon

VW: A longer and bigger Arteon flagship sedan replaces the CC four-door coupe. The sleek-appearing car with a wide stance gets a 2.0-liter TSI engine (268 hp) while paired to an eight-speed auto gearbox. With an even bolder front fascia and upscale cabin, the Jetta becomes an even more attractive proposition for small-car buyers. Indeed, this compact sedan is a splendid combination of thrift (starting at $18,545), practicality and fun to drive.

BENZ: A Mercedes-Benz base-priced at just $30,000? Yes, readers, your dream has come true. The brand-new A-Class compact sedan is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder engine and puts out just 188 hp. Also, the CLS 450 gets a design overhaul.

AUDI: The A6, A7 and A8 sedans have been restyled.

REVAMPED 2019 LEXUS ES350 IS A NEAR PICTURE-PERFECT RIDE!

December 12, 2018 By Nitish S. Rele

Launched 30 years ago, the Lexus ES350 has been the standard bearer for midsize luxury sedans. Delivering an entertaining and energetic ride since its launch, Lexus has once again totally overhauled the front-wheel-drive car for 2019. The seventh-gen ES is longer (2.6 inches), wider (1.8 inches), and lower (0.2 inches) from its predecessor. And, Lexus has added the more lively F Sport trim to the ES badge for the first time. The ES300h hybrid is available, too, with an all-new 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine putting out 215 horsepower and boasting fuel economy figures of 44 city, 45 highway and 44 combined.

The 3.5-liter V-6 engine in the ES350 blasts off 302 horsepower (up by 34 hp for 2019) @ 6600 rpm and 267 pounds-feet (up 19) of torque @ 4700 rpm. Out goes the six-speed auto gear box to be replaced by a more capable, smoother and fuel-efficient eight-speed. Suspension handled via independent front MacPherson strut-type and rear trailing-arm multilink does a worthy job of soaking up potholes and other road bumps. Returning a weighted response to the driver’s input is an improved power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering. And, 0 to 60 mph is achieved in 6.6 seconds instead of the former 7.1 seconds, which is fittingly quick for a 3,649-pound vehicle.

Ensconced on a unitized steel body is the signature spindle grille with a centered Lexus insignia, flanked by slim L-shaped LED projector-beam headlights and daytime running lights. A low, sleek roofline leads to wraparound LED tail lamps. Project chief designer Yasuo Kajino says the car has a “provocative elegance … The ES has always been an elegant luxury ride. For this generation, we have added daring design elements that challenge the traditional expectations of buyers.” And that certainly shows in its graceful stance. The cabin is typical Lexus with welcoming wood and piano black trim and leather as occupants are pampered in spacious seats. The rounded large tachometer housing a digital speedometer and multi-information display is easy to read. Passenger and trunk volume is commendable at 99.9 and 16.7 cubic feet space respectively. Other standard amenities include dual auto a/c, power moon roof and 14.6-inch, three-spoke tilt/telescopic steering column with paddle shifters, keyless entry/engine start, 10-way power front seats, 8-inch touch screen, analog clock, three USB ports, 10-speaker Pioneer audio system with a CD player and satellite radio, and rain-sensing wipers.

Standard safety features include dual front and side airbags, side curtain airbag, front knee airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes with Electronic Brake Distribution and Brake Assist, vehicle stability assist with traction control system, front/rear crumple zones, smart stop technology, three-point safety belts for all, daytime running lights and tire pressure monitoring system. Also, the Lexus Safety Sense + 2.0 fetches a pre-collision system that detects pedestrians, lane departure alert and lane tracing assist, dynamic cruise control and intelligent high beams at no cost.

Available in base, Luxury and Ultra Luxury trims, the ES350 starts at $39,600, the 300h at $41,410 and the F Sport at $44,135. Placed between the entry-level IS and the larger GS, the ES350 is the near-perfect ride. Tweaks to the mouse-like Remote Touch for toggling navigation, climate, audio and phone controls are welcome. This delightful Lexus is a well-balanced blend of luxury and performance.

BESTSELLER FORD F-150 OFFERS DIVERSE ENGINE CHOICES

December 12, 2018 By Nitish S. Rele

Did you know that the Ford F-150 has been the best-selling vehicle in the United States for 28 years and the best-selling pickup for 42 years? Now that is an accomplishment speaking volumes of this remarkable truck that can seat from three to six people.

The rear-wheel or four-wheel-drive pickup comes in several power train choices. So, take your pick. There’s the 3.3-liter V-6 engine that develops 290 horsepower @ 6500 rpm and 265 pounds-feet of torque @ 4000 rpm, mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. A 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 (twin turbochargers and a smaller-displacement engine work in tandem with gas direct injection) puts out 325 hp @ 5000 rpm and 4000 pounds-feet of torque @ 2750 rpm; a 3.5-liter V6 but with an EcoBoost cranks 375 hp @ 5000 rpm and 470 pounds-feet of torque @ 3500 rpm or a 450 hp @ 5000 rpm and 510 pounds-feet of torque @ 3500 rpm;  the sole 5.0-liter V-8 pumps 395 hp @ 5750 rpm and 400 pounds-feet of torque @ 4500 rpm; last but not least, one can say, is the all-new 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6 with 250 hp @ 3250 and 440 pounds-feet of torque @ 1750 rpm. All are coupled to a 10-speed gear box.

A double wishbone front and leaf rear suspension ensures dexterity, sure-footedness and poise to the ride, irrespective of road/weather conditions. And, the rack-and-pinion, electric power steering system affords outstanding feedback. Tow capacity for the F-150, which comes in as much as seven trims (XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, Limited, off-roader Raptor), peaks at an incredible 13,200 pounds. Cab styles are in regular, SuperCab (extended) and SuperCrew (crew cab), and range from 5½-foot to 8-foot beds.

Depending on the trim, cabin goodies include 10-way power heated and cooled front seats, overhead console, woodgrain-style trim, 60/40 rear bench, 8-inch display screen, dual auto a/c, leather tilt/telescopic steering wheel and an improved SYNC3 to access audio, telephone, navigation controls via a voice command, touch screen tap or button click. Well-placed storage bins and cubbies are scattered throughout.  There also are numerous packages and options to fit the needs of any potential buyer.

Apart from dual front and side airbags, side curtain airbag, four-wheel antilock brakes, AdvanceTrac with electronic stability control, rearview camera, antiskid system and tire pressure monitoring system, other standard safety features include auto high beams, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and a rearview camera with dynamic hitch assist.

Base-priced at $28,155 (for XL), with the Lariat around $41,700 and top-level Limited for $67,135, the F-150 boasts plentiful room for cargo and passengers, admirable tow capacity backed by a vast array of forceful engines. Even the fuel economy figures (15 mpg city/26 highway) are worth a mention. No wonder the aluminum-alloy body pickup has led in sales for more than four decades in the U.S.
