Give a little, help a lot

December 8, 2020 By Mary Rathman

Pasco County Tax Collector Mike Fasano’s office will host several collections to help the community during the 2020 holiday season.

Toys for Tots is one of the charities the Pasco County Tax Collector’s Office supports during the holiday season.

All five tax collector offices in Pasco County will be drop-off sites for the Marine Corps League’s annual Toys for Tots drive. Toys for children of military personnel and others in need will be collected up until Dec. 15.

The Gulf Harbors and Wesley Chapel offices will be donation sites for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Drive on Dec. 12 and Dec. 19. Donations can be made between 8:30 a.m. and noon on either day. Volunteers from the Salvation Army also will be at each location from Dec. 14 to Dec. 18, as well.

The collection jars for the Farm Share Holiday Food Giveaway will be displayed at all of the tax collector offices. Donations made will help to purchase fresh food for families in need this holiday season and into next year. The Holiday Food Giveaway is scheduled for Dec. 18 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., at Faith Baptist Church, 9230 Ridge Road in Port Richey.

For details about each program, information regarding hours and locations, or general questions about the services provided by Fasano’s offices, call Greg Giordano, assistant tax collector/communication and special projects, at 727-847-8179.

Easing the burden for students, families

July 10, 2019 By Mary Rathman

The 2019-2020 school year is fast approaching, and various organizations are hosting Back-to-School School Supply Drives to help those families that may not be able to afford the supplies that students need.

Pasco County Tax Collector Mike Fasano is involved in the effort — with all five offices tax collector offices accepting donations throughout the month of July.

Soon after that, select schools in each community will receive backpacks filled with supplies.

And, cash donations will be made to the school’s ABC (Assist, Believe & Care) Program to help classroom teachers purchase the supplies necessary to meet the needs of their students.

Monetary donations also can be mailed to: Tax Collector Mike Fasano, P.O. Box 276, Dade City, FL 33526. Please note “Back-to-School Backpack Promotion” on the memo line of the check.

For additional information, call Assistant Tax Collector Greg Giordano at (727) 847-8179, or visit PascoTaxes.com.

Gulfside Hospice Thrift Shoppes and the Kiwanis Club of Greater West Pasco also are helping students get ready for school.

All five Gulfside thrift store locations will partner with the Kiwanis Club to collect items through July 27. The donations will be distributed to students in need at Pasco County elementary schools at the beginning of the school year.

Last year, shoppers and community members donated enough supplies to fill more than 300 backpacks, which were dispersed to 11 schools.

The donors will get something back, too: They will receive a coupon for the thrift shop.

To find out more, visit Gulfside.org.

School supplies aren’t the only things on disadvantaged students’ wish lists.

Pasco County’s government and constitutional offices staff again will compete to be the top collectors of new footwear for students during the “Two Good Soles” Shoe & Sock Drive, which kicks off on July 25.

Last year’s drive resulted in donations of more than 2,200 pairs of shoes and 6,600 pairs of socks.

The donated shoes and socks will be presented to Pasco County Schools at an official ceremony later this year. That drive runs through Oct. 25.

Collection boxes can be found at Pasco County’s government and constitutional offices countywide. Visit PascoCountyFl.net.

Local groups help federal workers

January 23, 2019 By Brian Fernandes

Organizations around the region are stepping up to help, as workers and their families struggle during the nation’s longest partial federal government shutdown.

The help has come in various forms.

“The key is to take off some of the pressure from these folks (so they can) worry less about where their food is coming from,” explained Greg Giordano, assistant tax collector of Pasco County.

Adele Richoll packs paper bags with food at Father and Son Love Ministries on Jan. 18. Her organization is one of many that are providing help to federal workers who have been furloughed, or are working without pay, during the partial federal government shutdown. (Brian Fernandes)

The federal government partially shut down on Dec. 22, in the midst of a budget battle between President Donald Trump and members of congress, over funding for a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico.

Over the past weekend, Trump offered a deal that would include money for the border wall, while granting some immigrants protection for three years. But, Democrats were not moved by Trump’s offer.

The impasse affects about 800,000 federal employees, including some who are not working during the shutdown, and others who are working without pay.

The U.S. Coast Guard is one group of federal employees who are working without pay.

Pasco County Tax Collector Mike Fasano was inspired to specifically help those troops.

The five branches of the county’s tax office intends to distribute donations to the troops and their families.

“Mr. Fasano supports our men and women in uniform,” Giordano said. “He wanted to do something to show that this community is behind those individuals.”

On Day 1 of collections, Tom Kliebert was at the tax collector’s office to offer support.

“I’m always looking for things I can do to help out the military,” the Vietnam veteran said. “I really appreciate what they do to protect our country.”

The Wesley Chapel resident went directly to the grocery store to purchase donations when he learned online about the tax collector’s effort.

Debby Palmer, also of Wesley Chapel, received the notification through email and also wanted to help.

“I feel like I’ve been very blessed in my life, so I try to contribute where I can,” she said.

She brought in four bags of groceries to her local tax office.

he tax collector’s five branches began collecting donations on Jan. 16 and accumulated more than $2,300 in cash, 91 bags of groceries and more than a dozen gift cards within the first two days. (For addresses of branches, go to PascoTaxes.com).

“Obviously this has touched a nerve in the community,” Giordano said. He characterized the community’s generosity as being “incredible.”

Father and Son Love Ministries, at 24156 Foggy Ridge Parkway, in Lutz, also is offering a helping hand.

Pastor C.J. Johns heads the Lutz church, which has opened its doors to federal workers and their families every Friday.

Church staff and volunteers, from noon to 3 p.m. on Fridays, will give out bagged lunches, plus supplies of food for a week, for those requesting it.

The church also understands that some families won’t be able to afford to drive to the church, so it is willing to deliver food boxes to homes if they provide 48 hours’ notice, the pastor said.

Before the shutdown, the church was already operating a food drive and now has prepared for a larger turnout.

“We’re committed to helping our community,” Johns said. “It’s a need that has risen, and we’re going to do whatever we can to help ease the turmoil.”

Publix has supported the church’s efforts, Johns said, noting the grocery chain recently donated surplus items from the holidays.

Besides providing food, the church also offers free clothing and personal hygiene items.

It also understands that children need relief, too, so the church will make toys, birthday cakes and cupcakes available, the pastor said.

The church plans to keep the drive open 30 days after the government reopens to help workers get back on their feet.

Restored Hope, at 13703 17th St., in Dade City, also is committed to assisting federal workers for as long as necessary.

The nonprofit organization welcomes workers to stop by its center on Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Federal employees are asked to bring identification or their last pay stub to verify their status.

The organization’s pantry room is filled with nonperishable items and clothing.

Many items were leftover donations given by Metropolitan Ministries over the holidays, said Doreen Kennard, bookkeeper of Restored Hope.

Knowing there was surplus in storage, she thought: “Perfect timing, we’ll offer it to the government employees.”

Kennard added that the organization will do what it can to help workers pay past due bills.

During the federal government shutdown, Pasco County Utilities also is working to help federal employees, who are also PCU customers, develop an action plan to ensure continuation of services.

Pasco County Utilities will waive late fees and provide extensions for utility bills due by any federal employee who is on furlough or is required to work without compensation, as long as supporting documentation is provided.

Customers in need of assistance should call (813) 235-6012 during regular business hours.

Other acts of kindness can be seen throughout the Tampa Bay Area.

Tampa Bay Salvage, at 37832 Meridian Ave., in Dade City, is accepting donations of food and personal hygiene items at its Dade City and Palm Harbor offices.

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay is offering pet food to support furloughed workers who have pets. The donations are available on weekdays from noon to 7 p.m., and weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Verification is required.

The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay is connecting federal employees of Tampa International Airport with community resources.

Feeding Tampa Bay also has set up a food bank for TSA workers, and TECO is offering payment extensions on electric bills.

The Florida Aquarium in Tampa will also offer a day of relaxation with one free admission to federal workers.

These organizations are providing help to federal workers who are either off the job, or not being paid during the partial federal government shutdown:

  • Pasco County Tax Collector Offices (Land O’ Lakes, Dade City, Wesley Chapel, Gulf Harbors, New Port Richey); Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Restored Hope, 13703 17th St., Dade City; Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call (352) 437-4815.
  • Father and Son Love Ministries, 24156 Foggy Ridge Parkway, Lutz; Fridays from noon to 3 p.m. Call (813) 846- 9993.
  • Tampa Bay Salvage, 37832 Meridian Ave., Dade City; Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call (352) 437-5231.
  • The Florida Aquarium is offering one free admission to federal workers with identification.
  • Pasco County Utilities will help customers that are federal employees who are not receiving pay, or are furloughed, to ensure continuation of services. Documentation is needed. Those needing assistance should call (813) 235-6012.

Pasco tax collector’s office receives ‘Heart of Pasco’ award

January 16, 2019 By Brian Fernandes

Pasco County Tax Collector Mike Fasano and the Land O’ Lakes Tax Collector’s Office recently accepted the Heart of Pasco Award for the office’s exemplary customer service and outstanding community outreach efforts.

Sandy Graves, the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce’s chairwoman for community affairs, bestowed the award to Fasano, during a Jan. 10 ceremony outside the tax collector’s office in Land O’ Lakes.

The “Heart of Pasco” award goes to a business that exemplifies the chamber’s mission to “aggressively advocate for the interest of our diverse business community by promoting business advancement, economic growth and job creation.”

Graves said the acknowledgement stems, in part, from that the tax collector’s office expansion in Land O’ Lakes, allowing it to better accommodate its patrons.

In accepting the award, Fasano said, “as Land O’ Lakes grows and Lutz grows, so did our office.”

Fasano, who became the county’s tax collector in 2013, said he wanted to improve the agency and to expand its locations to better serve its customers.

“In some ways, we were behind the times at the tax collector’s office,” said Fasano, recalling when he joined the office. “We needed to be at the same level [and] direction that Pasco was going.”

As a former member of the Florida House of Representatives and the Florida Senate, he understood the importance of serving the needs of his constituents.

As tax collector, he identified that more space was required to serve an expanding population.

“The growth has been overwhelming, but it’s been good, solid growth for our economy and the tax base,” Fasano said.

To help address expanding needs, the tax collector’s office relocated its Land O’ Lakes office to a building next door, in October 2017. The building, previously occupied by the county’s health department, underwent a renovation supported by $1.4 million in county funds.

The Land O’ Lakes office has Saturday hours, too.

Graves also complimented the friendly nature of the tax collector’s staff.

“They all act as if they want to be there,” agreed Suzanne Beauchaine, executive director of the chamber. “They’re happy serving the community.”

Graves and Beauchaine said they have personally witnessed humble attributes of a leader in Fasano.

“The fact that Mike Fasano is the tax collector and you walk in there – he’s right there to say hello to you,” said Beauchaine. “He’s hands-on.”

In addition to attracting Fasano’s staff and chamber members, some Pasco residents also attended the award ceremony — which also recognized the tax collector’s work involving charitable organizations.

The Heart of Pasco Award is given out every four months to Central Pasco organizations for their community outreach – especially for charitable work.

Phyllis Bross, is a chamber member, who also serves as vice chair of the Community Aging and Retirement Services organization.

She said she’s seen Fasano work on behalf of the non-profit group which assists senior citizens in Pasco County.

The tax collector’s office has been involved in helping to raise money for numerous community causes and organizations.  In fact, the office has helped 58 different charities and organizations, with some being helped more than once, according to Greg Giordano, who keeps track of the efforts for Fasano’s office.

Last year, for instance, Fasano and his staff put together cookbooks to sell to raise funds for the local animal shelter.

Bross said Fasano obviously values his employees and they work together, like a family.

Under his leadership, the staff has seen their hourly wages increase by more than $5.

Fasano sees this as an expression of appreciation for his team’s hard work and dedication.

“We could not come close to the success we have if it wasn’t for the employees at the tax collector’s office,” Fasano said.

Since becoming the Pasco County tax collector in 2013, Mike Fasano and his staff have sought community support through the office for dozens of charities.

A chance for holiday giving at Pasco tax office

December 8, 2014 By Special to The Laker/Lutz News

Christmas is just a few weeks away, and Pasco County tax collector Mike Fasano is offering a few ways people can give and participate in making the holiday season better for those not as fortunate.

It all begins with the Salvation Army’s annual Red Kettle Drive at the offices in Gulf Harbors, Land O’ Lakes, Lutz and Dade City on Dec. 13 and Dec. 20. Bell ringers will be out between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. both days, looking for money to help with that church’s projects throughout the season.

The Volunteer Way and Farm Share will offer collection jars at all five tax collector offices in the county. Donations there will help purchase fresh food for families in need.

People can Be a Santa to a Senior by picking up a gift tag and purchasing a holiday present for a senior citizen in the community. Giving trees are on display in the Land O’ Lakes, Lutz and Dade City offices, and can all be done during regular business hours at those locations.

Toys For Tots continue at the West Pasco Government Center and at Gulf Harbors through the week ending Dec. 19.

Also on Dec. 19, families in Pasco County will be abel to pick up fresh food donated by Farm Share and other community organizations through the 20th annual holiday food giveaway. Food is distributed that day on a first-come basis beginning at 10 a.m. at Faith Baptist Church, 9230 Ridge Road in Port Richey.

“Your support of these wonderful local programs will help countless people enjoy the holidays this year,” Fasano said, in a release. “Additionally, if you are in need, please feel free to participate in the food giveaway.”

Details about each program, including hours and locations, are available by calling Greg Giordano at (727) 847-8179.

Tax collector goes pink for breast cancer awareness

September 26, 2014 By Special to The Laker/Lutz News

The Pasco County Tax Collector’s office is looking to raise money for the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation, and has made the organization its spotlight charity for October.

That means during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, county tax collector Mike Fasano and his staff will work to raise money for the disease that he says is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Florida next to skin cancer. It’s estimated that about 12,000 new cases will be diagnosed in the next 12 months.

The five branches of the tax collector’s office will promote the “End Breast Cancer” specialty license plate, which has historically raised more than $4 million dollars used for research and education grants throughout the state.

“In October, we are proud to help shine a spotlight on the needs of breast cancer patients in the hopes that this disease will one day be cured,” Fasano said, in a release. “The proceeds form the sale of this plate will go a long way towards ending a disease that afflicts so many women, both locally and nationwide.”

Drivers who have vehicle tag registrations coming due in October can choose to trade in their regular license plates for the specialty tag, Fasano said. Customers also can purchase the tag for newly registered vehicles.

Proceeds from the tag promotion go directly to the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation. For more information on the group, visit FloridaBreastCancer.org.

Tax collector’s office readies grand opening

July 28, 2014 By Special to The Laker/Lutz News

The Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce will host a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for the newest Pasco County Tax Collector’s office, opening next week off Wesley Chapel Boulevard.

The ceremony is set to begin Aug. 4 at 10 a.m., at the office, located at 4610 Pet Lane in ComPark 75 in Lutz.

Tax collector Mike Fasano said in a release, he saw a need for an office in that area almost immediately after he took office. The location near State Road 56 is designed to serve residents in Zephyrhills, Wesley Chapel and surrounding communities.

“The new Pasco County Tax Collector office in Wesley Chapel is long overdue,” said deputy tax collector Billy Poulos, in a release. “The area has seen a tremendous amount of growth and serves to have our services at its doorstep. For far too long, the residents of Wesley Chapel had to drive far distances to visit our offices. Those days are long gone as we open what is to be the new standard in tax collector offices.”

That includes wide concourses, a sleek and modern look, and close proximity to a major population hub, Poulos said.

The new office will be a full-service one that will include residential and commercial property tax, business receipt tax, drivers license testing and renewal, birth certificates, and registration for cars, vessels and motorcycles.

For more information on the new office and the grand opening, call Greg Giordano at (727) 847-8179, or visit PascoTaxes.com.

Fasano collecting weekend food for needy kids

July 1, 2014 By Special to The Laker/Lutz News

The federal government provides food for disadvantaged kids through the school breakfast and lunch program, but Pasco County Tax Collector Mike Fasano wants to make sure bellies are full on the weekends and holidays, too.

Fasano is teaming up with Pack-a-Sack 4 Kids in July, which provides a backpack full of food that each participating child can bring home on Friday afternoons that will get them through the whole weekend. More than 7,000 children in Pasco County alone lack adequate food during the weekends and school holidays, Fasano said.

Each tax collector’s office in the county will be a collection site for non-perishable food items such as single-serve cereal boxes, bowls, oatmeal packets, canned pasta, juice boxes, canned meats, crackers, pudding and applesauce cups, as well as other items like tuna or chicken packets.

Food will be picked up weekly as to allow fresh fruits and vegetables, but Fasano is asking that no items be donated that require refrigeration.

“There should not be a single child who goes to bed hungry each night,” Fasano said in a release. “Every item of food that is collected will go into the hands of young people throughout Pasco County to ensure that they have a full stomach during weekend and school holiday periods. I encourage anyone who visits one of our offices to bring in an item or two that a child would enjoy eating.”

Contributions can be made at the Land O’ Lakes and Dade City offices for the tax collector, as well as New Port Richey and Gulf Harbors, Fasano said. For more information about the food collection drive, call Greg Giordano at (727) 847-8179.

Tax collector focused on Arc of Florida in July

June 30, 2014 By Special to The Laker/Lutz News

The Arc of Florida/Center for Independence is the featured charitable organization for July by the Pasco County Tax Collector.

The goal is to raise funds to support those with developmental and other intellectual disabilities in the community. The Center for Independence is the Pasco County chapter of The Arc of Florida, and is a key provider of services to those with a variety of disabilities, according to a release.

Services there include residential, day-training, supported employment, and transportation assistance.

“Donations through the check-off program fund services that change the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Pasco County,” said Deborah Linton, chief executive of The Arc of Florida, in a release.

“There is probably not a person who does not know someone with a disability, whether a family member, friend or neighbor,” said county tax collector Mike Fasano, in a release. “The programs offered by the Center for Independence have made the lives of countless individuals better. Your donation of any amount will assist the center to continue providing the highest level of care possible.”

Customers who wish to support the charity can check off the box on their vehicle registration form to contribute $1 or more to the fund. Cash donations also will be accepted at tax collector’s offices around the county, like Land O’ Lakes, Dade City, New Port Richey and Gulf Harbors.

The promotion runs throughout July.

Suspicious backpack closes Dade City tax collector’s office

June 20, 2014 By Michael Hinman

The tax collector’s office in Dade City has reopened Friday after a backpack left behind at the office prompted a call to the bomb squad unit.

Dade City police were called to 14236 Sixth St., Friday morning to check on a suspicious backpack, according to tax collector spokesman Greg Giordano. County tax collector Mike Fasano quickly decided to close the office while law enforcement dealt with the backpack as a safety precaution.

Just after noontime, Fasano released a statement that the Dade City office would be closed the rest of the day because of an “ongoing law enforcement situation,” but would reopened for business at 9 a.m. Saturday “assuming all is well.” He directed those who needed tax collector services to visit other area offices, including one in Land O’ Lakes.

However, Fasano reversed course 15 minutes later after police found the backpack wasn’t dangerous, and had been safely contained.

Law enforcement had evacuated a portion of the building, but has since returned to business as usual, Giordano said.
