Vegetarian cooking demo

The Health & Wellness Center at Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel, 2700 Healing Way, will host a vegetarian cooking demonstration March 10 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Executive chef Jerry Dzialo and registered dietitian Denise Doman will prepare vegetarian dishes for guests to sample, and discuss a healthy plant-based menu.

The cost is $5 for wellness center members, and $10 for non-members.

Memory screenings

The Commons on Pretty Pond, 38130 Pretty Pond Road in Zephyrhills, will offer memory screenings March 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There also will be information on Alzheimer’s disease, referrals to community resources, care consults, and Alzheimer’s caregiver training.

Seminar on shoulder pain

The Health & Wellness Center at Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel, 2700 Healing Way, will present a seminar on shoulder pain March 10 at noon.

The guest speaker will be orthopedic surgeon Dr. Christopher Baker.

The topics will include the latest options to remedy shoulder pain, including a live demonstration of an ultrasound on the shoulder.

Tuesday Tutorials

The Heart Institute at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point will present a series of Tuesday Tutorials with complimentary lunch at the Rao Musunuru Conference Center, 14100 Yosemite Drive in Hudson.

All programs begin at noon. Upcoming tutorials are:

  • March 10: When do you need open heart surgery and what kind?
  • March 17: Life after heart attack, open heart surgery and stroke
  • March 24: What to do when ulcers and wounds don’t heal

Hip arthritis lecture

Aging agency seeking nominations

The Area Agency on Aging of Pasco-Pinellas Inc., is seeking nominations for the first Patricia J. Bell Achievements in Aging Award.

The award is in honor of the memory of Patricia J. Bell, a longtime advocate in the aging field.

Nominees should demonstrate significant contributions in the field of aging in Pasco and/or Pinellas counties.

Nominations will be accepted until March 9.

The winner will be recognized during a luncheon April 24 at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater.

Infant CPR course

The obstetrics program at Medical Center of Trinity, 9330 State Road 54, will offer a Family and Friends Infant CPR class March 7 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Participants will learn the skills of the American Heart Association Course.

Gulfside Hospice is hosting these upcoming orientations for new volunteers:

  • March 5 and March 6 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Gulfside’s Center for Hospice Care, 5760 Dean Dairy Road in Zephyrhills
  • March 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Gulfside’s Bereavement and Community Outreach Center, 6230 Lafayette St., in New Port Richey
  • March 16 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., at Gulfside’s Lutz Thrift Shoppe, 1930 Land O’ Lakes Blvd.

Volunteers must be at least 15 years old.

Support for communication deficits

The Medical Center of Trinity, 9330 State Road 54, will host a biweekly communication deficits support group.

The group aims to assist individuals suffering from communication deficits as a result of a cerebral vascular accident or other neurological disorder.

Caregivers and spouses are welcome to attend.

Student Citizens recognized for February
The Greater Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce honored the February Student Citizens during a special ceremony. Each month, one student from nine area schools is selected for exemplary effort, achievement and contribution to their school, family and community. Students recognized were, from left, Kara Burnap, Chester Taylor Elementary School; Matthew Barba, Woodland Elementary School; Sarah Juergens, West Zephyrhills Elementary School; Alexandra Wilder, Zephyrhills High School; Ayden Popour, Stewart Middle School; Joseph Atanasio, Hope Learning Academy; and Genesis Perez, Heritage Academy. Also recognized, but not pictured, were Aimah Isaac, East Pasco Adventist Academy; and Nathan Rozell, The Broach School.

New bilingual publication for children’s allergies
The National Alliance for Hispanic Health wants to raise awareness of children’s severe allergic reactions and anaphylaxis, and how schools are equipped to deal with it.

The organization has launched a campaign to inform parents, schools and the public on this health issue.

The Alliance has developed a bilingual publication on anaphylaxis available as a PDF and as an ebook, on iTunes and Amazon.

Saint Leo to host Florida Academy of Sciences meeting
Saint Leo University, 33701 State Road 52 in St. Leo, will host the Florida Academy of Sciences 2015 Annual Meeting March 20 and March 21.

Florida college faculty and other specialists from the social sciences, biological sciences, physical sciences, science education community, and the fields of engineering, computing and mathematics, meet to present research findings and to interact with peers.

Conference participants do no need to be a member of the academy to present a paper or poster. The conference also offers undergraduates and graduate students the opportunity to make academic presentations.

Middle school essay contest
Pasco County Tax Collector Mike Fasano is accepting entries for the Constitutional Officers Essay Contest until 5 p.m. March 31.

The contest is for middle school students in sixth grade to eighth grade. Students of Pasco’s public/charter, private and home schools can participate.

The essay should be 500 words or less and answer the question, “Do you think taxes are important? If so, why? If not, why not?”

Each entry must include the student’s name, school, grade and contact information.

Students in public/charter schools should submit their essays to their principal, who will then forward them to the tax collector’s office.

Students in nonpublic schools can send their essays to Greg Giordano, director of customer relations, Pasco County Tax Collector’s Office, 8731 Citizens Drive, Room 120, New Port Richey FL 34654.

The winner will be announced on April 13 and will receive an iPad mini.
