A back-to-school helping hand
The Rotary Club of Lutz recently donated back-to-school supplies to Lutz Elementary School as one of its service projects. Lutz student immersed in Russian culture
Russell Duncan, a 10th grader at Middleton Magnet High School, participated in the Concordia Language Villages program for a four-week session at Lesnoe Ozero, the Russian Language Village located near Bemidji, Minnesota.

Duncan was immersed in the Russian language and culture through learning groups, authentic foods, holiday celebrations, re-enactments of historic events, conversations and more.

Concordia Language Villages is a recognized leader in global education offering 15 world language programs.

Duncan is the son of Teresa and Yves Hamard of Lutz.

Bishop McLaughlin open house
Bishop McLaughlin Catholic School, 13651 Hays Road in Spring Hill, will host an open house Nov. 2 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Knights help Bishop McLaughlin
Local Knights of Columbus Council 8104 of Land O’ Lakes recently presented Bishop McLaughlin High School with a check for $4,000 to be used for scholarship money for students with financial needs.

The proceeds came from the Knights’ annual Lenten Fish Fry at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church.

Reflection program at Long Middle
The theme for this year’s PTA Reflections Program at Long Middle School is “The world would be a better place if…”

The six categories for submissions are dance choreography, film/video production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts. The deadline is Oct. 1

Student youth art contest
The Medical Center of Trinity, 9330 State Road 54, is having its annual Expressions of Thanks Youth Art Contest until Sept. 30.

Students in kindergarten through 12th grade are asked to celebrate the service of all U.S. military veterans, those who currently serve our great nation and their families, by submitting artwork, poetry or an essay.

Artwork must be submitted by Sept. 30 to the information desk at the hospital, or by mail to Medical Center of Trinity, Attn: Youth Art Contest, 9330 State Road 54, Trinity FL 34655.

First-place winners at each grade level will receive a $25 gift card.

The grand prize award is a choice of a bicycle or an iPod nano.

Cadets achieve success in law enforcement program
Cadets in the three most recent graduating classes of the Pasco-Hernando State College law enforcement and correctional officer programs achieved an overall 97 percent passing rate on state certification examinations administered by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. PHSC Cadet and class captain Randy Groves accepts congratulations from Charlie May, executive director of Public Service Programs, at the graduation ceremony in July. Groves passed the state exam and achieved the highest academic average after taking final exams.

Free breakfasts for students
The District School Board of Pasco County has amended its policy for serving meals to students under the National School Breakfast Programs for the 2014-15 school year.

All students will be served a free breakfast at the following sites:

• Centennial Elementary School

• San Antonio Elementary School

• Taylor Elementary School

• West Zephyrhills Elementary School

• Woodland Elementary School

• Centennial Middle School

• Pasco Middle School

• Stewart Middle School

• Pasco High School

• Zephyrhills High School

Basic computer skills
The Basic Computer Skills Course, designed for novice computer users and seniors, will start Sept. 16, at CARES Crescent Enrichment Center, 13906 Fifth St., in Dade City. Classes are Tuesday and Thursday for five weeks, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Rays-Helios scholars honored
The Rays Baseball Foundation and Helios Education Foundation honored 100 Rays-Helios Scholars at Tropicana Field on Aug. 29.

The foundations made a million-dollar pledge to “Take Stock in Children” in Pasco, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pinellas and Sarasota counties.

“Doubling Up for Education” is a unique program that gives students the financial resources and mentor support they need to achieve a postsecondary education at a publicly funded university in the state of Florida.

Free pregnancy care
LifeChoices Women’s Care, 1527 N. Dale Mabry Highway, Suite 101 in Lutz, offers free pregnancy testing and limited obstetrical ultrasounds to teens, women and couples facing an unplanned pregnancy.

The center is open Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Appointments are recommended.

Sertoma receives $8,000 from Wells Fargo
Sertoma Speech & Hearing Foundation of Florida recently received $8,000 from Wells Fargo. The funding will be used to sponsor Sertoma’s school screening program in Pasco County.

Sertoma volunteers perform state education department mandated hearing screens for all Headstart, pre-K, kindergarten and first-grade students, as well as sixth-grade students at local middle schools.

Rotary club welcomes Shane Sanborn
Shane Sanborn, lead physical therapist with Bayfront Health Dade City, recently spoke to the Sunrise Rotary Club about the growth of the rehab program at the hospital. Community Health System, the hospital’s parent company, is planning on spending about $2 million for a new orthopedic and operating room to service the community. Women’s health center opening
Florida Hospital Zephyrhills is hosting a grand opening for its newly remodeled Women’s Health Center Sept. 24 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a ribbon cutting at 5:30 p.m. There will be a tour of the center, food and refreshments, and information about personalized care for women in the community.

Sister Stroll 2.0
Florida Hospital Zephyrhills will kick off the Pink Army breast cancer awareness campaign Oct. 2, on its front lawn.

Registration is at 5 p.m. The stroll begins at 5:30 p.m., with a ceremony to follow.

Participants can stroll along the walking trail and enjoy food and fun along the way.

Registered participants will receive a swag bag filled with pink goodies.

There will be a car show, entertainment, door prizes, as well as food and drink.

Bayfront Health receives A-fib certification
Bayfront Health Dade City has received full Atrial Fibrillation Certification from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care.
Atrial fibrillation is the most common cardiac arrhythmia and has been recognized as a health concern that in some cases can lead to stroke and possible death.
Atrial fibrillation patients use more health care services and have much higher health care costs than those without the disease.
Bayfront Health Dade City has demonstrated its expertise and commitment to quality patient care by meeting or exceeding a wide set of stringent criteria and undergoing a comprehensive review by an accreditation review specialist from the SCPC.

Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point has honored Keith Kramer, an environmental services assistant, with the August Employee of the Month award. He received multiple nominations from visitors, family members and colleagues. Kramer (with certificate) is seated with members of the Environmental Services team, at a reception in his honor.

FHWC hosts women’s event
Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel is hosting a free, multi-generational women’s health and wellness event at Saddlebrook Resort, 5700 Saddlebrook Way in Wesley Chapel, Sept. 20 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event will include health and wellness presentations from area experts, and a healthy cooking demonstration.

Medical grants available for children
The UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation is seeking grant applications from families in need of financial assistance to help pay for their child’s health care treatments, services or equipment not covered — or not fully covered — by their commercial health insurance plan.

Qualifying families can receive up to $5,000 per grant, with a lifetime maximum of $10,000 per child to help pay for medical services and equipment such as physical, occupational and speech therapy, counseling services, surgeries, prescriptions, wheelchairs, orthotics, eyeglasses and hearing aids.

Children must be younger than 17, and families must meet economic guidelines, reside in the United States, and have a commercial health insurance plan.

Grants are available for medical expenses families have incurred 60 days prior to the date of application, as well as for ongoing and future medical needs.

Parents or legal guardians can apply for grants at UHCCF.org. There is no application deadline.

New MinuteClinic in Lutz
MinuteClinic has opened a new walk-in clinic inside the CVS store at 2322 Land O’ Lakes Blvd., in Lutz.

The clinic is part of the company’s plan to add 150 new clinics nationwide in 2014.

No appointments are required. Most health insurance is accepted.

The clinic is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Moffitt recruiting patients for research
H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute is recruiting male patients and their caregivers for a research study that takes a closer look at the uptake of prostate cancer information and health service.

The Joint Commission, in conjunction with The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, recently recognized the Medical Center of Trinity with Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Centers.

The certification signifies an organization’s dedication to fostering better outcomes for patients. The center also has demonstrated that its program meets critical elements of performance to achieve long-term success in improving outcomes for stroke patients.

Denham Oaks open house
Denham Oaks Elementary School, 1422 Oak Grove Blvd., in Lutz, is hosting an open house Sept. 9 starting at 6 p.m.

Rigberg inducted into chefs society
Michael Rigberg, chef instructor and executive chef at Land O’ Lakes High School, was inducted into the American Academy of Chefs, the honor society of the American Culinary Federation, during a ceremony July 27 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Riberg has more than 40 years experience in the hospitality industry, and is president of the ACF Tampa Bay Culinary Association.

Internship program graduates second class
On Aug. 1, PharmaWorks and CareerSource Pasco Hernando graduated its second summer internship class.

The curriculum is modeled after the 20th century style of German apprenticeships, and is comprised of classic German training and classroom studies, with a practical 21st century approach.

The internship program teaches not only tangible skills, but instills soft skills by educating interns on how to write resumes and conduct successful workplace etiquette.

Leadership seminar a plus for Bush
Brandon Bush, a senior at Zephyrhills High School, recently shared his experience attending S4TL-Seminar for Tomorrow’s Leaders with the Sunrise Rotary Club of Dade City, which sponsored his attendance. Bush wants to return next year as a ‘yellow shirt’ to assist in the weeklong events. He is the son of Randy Bush, funeral director at Hodges Family Funeral Home in Dade City. Rays Baseball Foundation awards grant to PHSC
Pasco-Hernando State College Foundation recently received a $5,000 grant from the Rays Baseball Foundation Community Fund Grant Program.

The funds will support PHSC’s Concept College outreach program that provides an opportunity for at-risk students to explore a variety of career paths.

Woodland Elementary moms collecting school supplies
Three local mothers — Shelly Brantman, Ailisa Starnes and M.J. Price — with children at Woodland Elementary School in Zephyrhills, are teaming up to collect school supplies at their workplaces.

The trio hopes to alleviate some of the financial strain on area families by collecting and distributing the supplies not only now, but throughout the year. All donations will be distributed to schools in Zephyrhills and Dade City.

PHSC college night
Pasco-Hernando State College will host its annual college night Sept. 9-10 for prospective students in the Pasco County area.

The two-night event will be in the gym at the Dade City campus, 36727 Blanton Road, Sept. 9 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and at the New Port Richey campus, 10230 Ridge Road, Sept. 10 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

There will be representatives from PHSC and numerous public and private colleges, universities and other education institutions, as well as military participants.

New leader for charter schools
Jeffrey Yungmann from the Hernando County school district has been approved by the Pasco County School Board to serve as a new charter school supervisor.

Yungmann began his education career in 1989 as a math teacher.

He has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of South Florida, and a master’s degree in education administration from Grand Canyon College in Arizona.

Three new charter schools — Learning Lodge Academy, Classical Preparatory Charter School and Pepin Academies-Pasco — join six existing charter schools.

NAMI Peer-to-Peer
The National Alliance on Mental Illness will host a free Peer-to-Peer recovery focused education program for adults living with mental illness from Sept. 5 to Nov. 7.

The program is 10 two-hour sessions for individuals at least 18 years old. It incorporates presentations, discussions and exercises, and provides a toolkit of information on up-to-date research, symptoms, relapse prevention, and skills for making decisions and reducing stress.

Classes are from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., at BayCare Behavioral Health Veterans Resource Center, 6819 Massachusetts Ave., in New Port Richey.

Bob South, a transporter with the lift team at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point, was named the hospital’s July Employee of the Month. Ice bucket challenge tops $32 million in donations
Donations from the ice bucket challenge recently topped $32 million nationally, according to the most recent tabulations from The ALS Association.

Florida chapter spokeswoman Alissa Gutierrez said she hopes the Florida organization will see an increase in donations as well, according to a release.

The challenge became a viral sensation thanks to Pete Frates and his family. The former Boston College baseball captain has lived with ALS since 2012, and has been an advocate for The ALS Association Massachusetts Chapter.

The challenge is, within 24 hours, to pour a bucket of ice water over your head, or make a donation to an ALS charity. Or both.

Firefighter inspires PHSC scholarship
The Pasco-Hernando State College Foundation recently received $11,000 from the James Santella Foundation to establish the James Santella Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship endowment will support Hernando County residents, or graduates from a Hernando County high school, who exhibit an interest in a fire rescue or first responder service career. Santella was a 2004 PHSC graduate and a firefighter for Spring Hill Fire Rescue who passed away from Lou Gehrig’s disease. Santella is shown with his wife Kim and son, Connor James.

Medical scholarship fundraiser
The Medical Center of Trinity Volunteers, 9330 State Road 54, is hosting a fundraising event for scholarships for students studying in the medical field.

The fundraiser is Aug. 21-22, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the lobby of the hospital, and will showcase Masquerade Jewelry and accessories. All items are $5 or less.

There will be a silent auction featuring gift baskets, gift cards, and other items.

Students interested in enrolling for fall term classes at Pasco-Hernando State College should register immediately. Classes begin Aug. 25.

PHSC will introduce three new health programs this fall: pharmacy technician, surgical technology, and health information technology.

There will also be two baccalaureate degree programs: bachelor of applied science in supervision and management, and bachelor of science in nursing.

An additional $20 is assessed during the late registration period. Late registration is Aug. 25 through Aug. 29.

Hannah Williamson, a senior at Wiregrass Ranch High School, participated in the Concordia Language Villages program for a two-week session at Waldsee, the German Language Village, near Bemidji, Minnesota.

Williamson was immersed in the German language and culture through learning groups, authentic foods, holiday celebrations, re-enactments of historic events, conversations and more.

Concordia Language Villages is a recognized leader in global education offering 15 world language programs.

MinuteClinic has opened a new walk-in clinic inside the CVS store at 2322 Land O’ Lakes Blvd., in Lutz.

The clinic is part of the company’s plan to add 150 new clinics nationwide in 2014.

Volunteers are needed in Pasco and Pinellas counties.

Pasco-Hernando State College honored the Porter family of Wiregrass Ranch by erecting this permanent display on a wall at Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch, a satellite of the college that opened in January. The Porter family donated 60 acres to the college to open the satellite in Wesley Chapel.

Back to school drive
The Children’s Home Society of Florida is having a back-to-school drive through Aug. 11 to help foster children.

There are separate needs for elementary, middle and high schools, including backpacks, index cards, pens, markers, transparent tape, calculators and wide-ruled paper.

The drop-off location is 4250 Oak Fair Blvd., in Tampa, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Bodhi Price, a student at Woodland Elementary School in Zephyrhills, recently performed in Sarasota’s Circus Arts Conservatory’s Summer Showcase on his birthday, July 11. Bodhi would like to become a stuntman, actor and performer, and circus training is part of his plan to achieve his goal.
