Diane Ricca recipient of humanitarian award
Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point recently presented Diane Ricca with the 2013 Frist Volunteer Humanitarian Award.

Ricca has volunteered at Bayonet Point since July 2006, accumulating more than 20,000 merit hours. Her work includes the gift shop as well as the volunteer board of directors at large.

Ricca also volunteers with the Sun Coast Health and Education Foundation, All Around Kids Foundation, and various other charities.

 

CoDA meets in Trinity
The Medical Center of Trinity hosts the Co-Dependence Anonymous group every Thursday at 7 p.m., at 5637 Marine Parkway in New Port Richey.

Upcoming meetings are May 8, May 15, May 22 and May 29.

This group focuses on the common purpose of developing healthy relationships.

Florida Cancer Affiliates is offering a bi-weekly breast cancer support group every other Thursday at the New Port Richey center, 5500 Little Road.

Health care professionals & Alzheimer’s
The University of South Florida Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute, 4001 E. Fletcher Ave., in Tampa, will host “Alzheimer’s Disease: What Health Care Professionals Need to Know” May 9 at 8 a.m.

The program will award three hours of credit for health care professionals. Topics include driving and dementia, creating a safe environment, and medication safety issues.

Hospice’s Grief’s Journey

Medical Center of Trinity one of best for ER care
The Medical Center of Trinity has received the Women’s Choice Award as one of America’s best hospitals in emergency care.

The award identifies the nation’s best health care institutions and signifies the center’s commitment for creating an extraordinary health care experience for women and all patients, according to a release.

The award is based on patient satisfaction, clinical excellence, and women’s needs when it comes to treatment and quality hospital experience, said Delia Passi, chief executive and founder of WomenCertified, home of the Women’s Choice Award.

Wiregrass students ‘believe, dream, inspire’
Students from Wiregrass Ranch High School created original works of art related to the theme “Believe, Dream, Inspire” for this year’s Reflections Art Program. Categories included literature, music composition, photography, visual arts, film production, and choreography and dance.

Winners at the county level will move on to states level in the National PTA Reflections Program. They included:
• Literature: Delaney Wolkov in first, Bryce Pfieffer in second, and Selyne Singh in third
• Photography: Jordan Welniak in first, Jake Richmon in second, and Denali Krampe in third
• Visual Arts: Kaylee Brennan in first, Eric Boudreaux in second, and Mrudula Peddinti in third

Mohr gets USDA honorable mention
Mandi Mohr, an eighth grader at Saint Anthony Catholic School in San Antonio, was awarded an honorable mention from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for her project “Cash Cows” at the Florida State Science Fair Competition in Lakeland earlier this month.

She also received a special recognition award from the science fair, and an additional award and cash prize from the Association of Fertilizer and Phosphate Chemists.

LOLCS students shine at national competition
Three Land O’ Lakes Christian School students received national honors at the 37th Annual American Association of Christian Schools National Competition at Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C., earlier this month.

Students representing almost 200 Christian high schools, competed in 77 categories in the basic areas of Bible, music, speech, art and academics.

Local students recognized were:
• Vickie Frazier, senior, first place in oil painting
• Abigail Del Monte, senior, second place in Spanish academic testing
• Tommy Campbell, sophomore, second place in topical preaching

WRHS book fair
The Wiregrass Ranch High School art department will host an “Art Matters” Book Fair May 8 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Barnes & Noble at The Shops at Wiregrass in Wesley Chapel.

There will be art displays, story time at 6 p.m., gift-wrapping services for Mother’s Day, face painting, drama improvisation, music and prizes.

A percentage of Barnes & Noble purchases will benefit the high school’s art department.

Hagan is distinguished alumnus
Hillsborough County commissioner Ken Hagan was honored as the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year for his contributions to the community by The Hillsborough Community College Foundation at the 2014 Presidential Showcase April 17.

Hagan has served on the commission since 2002. He also was vice chairman and chaplain.

Nursing info session at PHSC
Pasco-Hernando State College will host an information session on its new nursing bachelor’s degree program May 1 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., at its West Campus, 10320 Ridge Road in New Port Richey.

The session will feature information about the online degree program for licensed registered nurses who have a nursing associate’s degree, with additional skills in management, leadership, theory and research.

The first class begins in August, and interested students my apply for admission no later than May 30.

‘Bee Bully-Free’ in Zephyrhills
Zephyrhills area schools have been encouraging students, teachers and staff to wear black and yellow on the last Friday of each month as part of the “Bee Bully-Free Initiative.” The initiative provides stickers and coloring book pages for schools that request them, participates in the Great American Teach-in, and provides certificates and awards for students who transform from bullies into kinder versions of themselves.

The Pasco-Hernando State College Foundation received a $7,000 gift from HCA hospitals — Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point and Medical Center of Trinity — as well as a gift of $11,256 from Florida Blue and the Florida College System Foundation. Gulfside Hospice’s bereavement department offers bereavement groups with a set beginning and ending date so that participants can get to know each other and feel more comfortable sharing their feelings during the group sessions. Each new group will last approximately 10 weeks.

Hospital needs volunteers
Florida Hospital Zephyrhills is looking for volunteers to help with a variety of tasks including transporting patients to and from tests, driving the shuttle, distributing mail, cafeteria, clerical and administrative, and more. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old.

There is a minimum requirement of four volunteer hours per week.

Volunteers receive a complimentary meal in the café on the days they work, and recognition at the annual volunteer banquet. Orientation sessions are twice a month.

Pasco Challenge a success
More than 400 participants ran, walked and biked to support the Alzheimer’s Family Organization at the 2014 Pasco Challenge at Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park in New Port Richey. They raised more than $7,000 to support the organization’s programs and services.

Florida Hospital Zephyrhills has named Cheryl Kennison as its new director of marketing. Kennison served as marketing manager at Florida Hospital Tampa before coming to Zephyrhills.

She also has served as marketing and foundation director for Bert Fish Medical Çenter in New Smyrna Beach.

Kennison is a graduate of Union College in Nebraska.

Kennison resides in Wesley Chapel with her family.

PHSC names Academy leaders
Pasco-Hernando State College has named Charlie May director of public service programs, and Patricia Maxwell instructor coordinator of the Law Enforcement Academy.

May most recently served as forensic services chief for the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, and is retired after 25 years of service to that office. He is a former police officer with the New York City Housing Authority.

Maxwell is an adjunct law enforcement instructor at Hillsborough Community College, and was most recently the assistant terminal manager at Murphy Oil Corp. She is a former officer with the Temple Terrace Police Department.

President’s List welcomes Smith
Robert Ellis Smith of Land O’ Lakes, was named to the President’s List at Pensacola Christian College for academic achievement during the fall semester.

Pensacola Christian College is a liberal arts college with an enrollment of 4,500 students.

Robert played baseball, basketball and football at Academy at the Lakes, is an advanced pianist, and obtained his Florida insurance license just shy of the age of 18.

Clowning around at Wesley Creative
The Clown Unit of the Ladies Oriental Shrine Cairo Court 97 visited Wesley Creative School in Dade City. Oak Hill fills residency program
Oak Hill Hospital in Spring Hill has filled all 10 of its internal medicine residency positions through its association with the National Resident Matching Program.

The program is accredited for 30 residents, with 10 residents starting July 2014.

This is a three-year training program, and an additional 10 residents will be added each year to total 30 residents at Oak Hill Hospital over the next three years.

Sibling classes

Gulfside Hospice & Pasco Palliative Care has appointed Dr. Charles L. Suggs III as its new chief medical officer.

Suggs started at Gulfside Regional Hospice, now Gulfside Hospice, in August 2006 as a team physician. He also has served as the medical director for both Gulfside Regional Hospice and Pasco Palliative Care.

He has more than 30 years experience practicing medicine, and is board certified in hospice and palliative care medicine, as well as in obstetrics and gynecology.

Chatterboxes meeting

The support group assists people suffering from communication deficits as a result of a cerebral vascular accident or other neurological disorder.

The St. Petersburg Red Cross Nurse Assistant Training Center is one of seven sites in the country selected to receive the scholarships from a partnership between the Wounded Warrior Project and the American Red Cross.

The funds were raised at the club’s We Honor Vets Casino Night at Spartan Manor in New Port Richey Feb. 7. The obstetrics program at Medical Center of Trinity, 9330 State Road 54, is offering a six-week prepared childbirth course beginning April 2, one night per week, at 7 p.m. Cost is $70.

Chatterboxes meeting
Medical Center of Trinity, 9330 State Road 54, will host a Chatterboxes meeting April 3 at 3 p.m.

The support group assists people suffering from communication deficits as a result of a cerebral vascular accident or other neurological disorder.

Caregivers and spouses are encouraged to attend.

Chronic disease program
Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point, 14000 Fivay Road in Hudson, will offer the chronic disease self-management program Living Healthy beginning April 3 at 1:30 p.m., and continuing on April 10, April 17, April 24, May 1 and May 8.

Topics include dealing with fatigue, appropriate exercise, use of medications, new treatments, and communicating with family.

The workshop is free, but class size is limited.

Celiac support group
Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point, 14000 Fivay Road in Hudson, hosts the West Pasco celiac support group the first Saturday of every month at 10 a.m. The next meeting is April 5.
