The Laker has opened voting for its 2024 Readers’ choice awards.

Readers can nominate their favorite companies in more than 10 categories through Oct. 31.

The readers’ choice campaign allows local companies to get the recognition they deserve while also providing the community a resource in the form of a list of businesses that deliver exceptional products, services and experiences.

Imagine if Rocky Balboa bothered looking up the winners of Best Gym, Best Massage Therapy or Best Supplement Store. The Italian Stallion may have beaten Apollo Creed in their first boxing match.

The Griswold family in “National Lampoon’s Vacation” could have avoided a series of cross-country calamities had they consulted first with the Best Travel Agent.

And Anakin Skywalker probably would have made better decisions in “Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith,” if he had talked about his troubles with a bartender from the Best Bar or a server from the Best Wine Bar. Perhaps a trip to the Best Coffee House would have given Young Skywalker a bit more focus?

Maxwell ready to serenade in Florida portion of tour

The soulful sounds of Maxwell have lingered on R&B and hip-hop playlists for more than 25 years. And Florida residents can hear those sounds live through The Serenade Tour. 

The three-time Grammy Award-winner will perform at the Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood on Sept. 14 and at Amalie Arena in Tampa on Sept. 15. 

Maxwell has released five albums since his debut: “Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite” (1996), “Embrya” (1998), “Now” (2001), “BLACKsummers’night” (2009) and ““blackSUMMERS’night” (2016). 

His return to touring marks a reunion with Jazmine Sullivan, who joined him on his Maxwell 08 Tour. Sullivan’s discography includes “Fearless” (2008), “Love Me Back” (2010), “Reality Show” (2012) and “Heaux Tales” (2022). She won a Grammy for Best R&B Album for “Heaux Tales.”

They’ll be joined by October London, who paid homage to Marvin Gaye on his album, “The Rebirth of Marvin.” His single, “Back to Your Place,” has received plays on R&B radio.

Youth lead charge against substance abuse

The Alliance for Health Communities holds youth advocacy meetings to end substance abuse. 

Middle and high school students are invited to the meetings, which are held at three locations:

  • 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month at the New Port Richey Recreation Center, 6630 Van Buren St., New Port Richey.
  • 5 to 6 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month at South Holiday Library, 4649 Mile StretchDrive, Holiday.

Hospital earns accreditation for chest pain

DAVENPORT – The American College of Cardiology has recognized AdventHealth Heart of Florida in Davenport for its expertise and commitment in treating patients with chest pain. 

AdventHealth Heart of Florida was awarded Chest Pain Center Accreditation with Primary PCI in August based on an onsite evaluation of the staff’s ability to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients who may be experiencing a heart attack.

Hospitals receiving the accreditation must take part in a clinical process that includes: examining variances of care, developing an action plan; a rigorous onsite review; and monitoring for sustained success. 

 

AdventHealth sites host free health talks

ZEPHYRHILLS – AdventHealth Zephyrhills has announced topics for free health Lunch and Learn talks over the next couple of months. 

  • Cardiology experts will speak at Keeping Your Heart Healthy from noon to 1 p.m. Sept. 18. 
  • Women’s Health will be the topic for October from noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 24.

BayCare offers health screenings

LAND O’ LAKES – BayCare will offer free health screenings at Land O Lakes Library. 

This includes lipid screenings with blood pressure, lipid, BMI and glucose checks (all done via finger sticks). Each screening should take about 10 to 15 minutes per person. 

The event takes place from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 19 at 2818 Collier Parkway. Walk-ins are welcome. 

 

Chalk Talk (09/11/24): Grant to boost magnet schools

Grant to boost magnet schools

WESLEY CHAPEL – Pasco County Schools has received a $63,000 grant from the Suncoast Credit Union.

The contribution will help bolster the district’s ongoing magnet schools recruitment, retention and community engagement efforts.

Pasco County Schools hosts 36 magnet schools and programs with nearly 15,000 students. 

Schools offer an array of programs, including Cambridge, International Baccalaureate (IB), STEM and STEAM, Biomedical Sciences, Engineering and Cybersecurity. These programs are meant to spark passion in our students and connect their learning to real-world applications.

 

Student achievements

  • Zephaniah Johnson, of Land O’Lakes, maintained a 3.5 grade point average or better on a 4.0 point scale to make the dean’s list for the spring semester at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
  • Evan Nelson, of San Antonio, made the dean’s list at Columbia College in Columbia, Missouri. Nelson attended online classes and scored at least a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0-point scale.

Noire Nail Bar secures location

WESLEY CHAPEL —  CrossMarc Services LLC represented the owners of boutique salon chain Noire Nail Bar in a new long-term lease of 2,100 square feet at 32265 Overpass Road.

It will open with a staff of 20 in the fourth quarter of this year at Publix-anchored Epperson at Innovation Springs, which is the retail piece of a 1,000-home community with a 7.7-acre crystal lagoon in Epperson Ranch.

Flavia Kanyago, vice president of sales and leasing for CrossMarc Services, negotiated the transaction on behalf of the tenant. The listing agent David Conn with CBRE represented the landlord, Epperson Ranch Retail.

Ellianos Coffee signs four-store deal

TAMPA BAY – Ellianos Coffee announced an expansion into the Tampa Bay area with a new four-store development agreement. 

The expansion into the Tampa metro market follows the drive-thru specialty coffee brand’s growth in other parts of Florida. It has already expanded into Orlando and other areas of Central Florida. Ellianos has eight stores in the Jacksonville area.

Ellianos Coffee offers a Southern twist on traditional coffee shop fare. It currently operates 54 stores.

Better Together partners with church for job fair

TAMPA  – Better Together is partnering with Exciting Central Tampa Baptist Church to host a community job fair.

The church-based job fair connects job seekers with local employers who are ready to hire, while also providing resources to facilitate stronger connections and more hires. Free one-on-one job coaching sessions are available to job seekers to review resumes and interviewing skills, and additional services will be available onsite.

Commission seeks applicants for vacancies

TALLAHASSEE – The Florida Bar Board of Governors is seeking applicants for two vacancies on the Florida Judicial Qualifications Commission. 

The vacancies are for two attorneys to serve six-year terms commencing Jan. 1, 2025. Applicants must be members of The Florida Bar in good standing.

The 15-member commission is authorized under Article V, Section 12, Florida Constitution, to investigate complaints against judges whose conduct demonstrates a present unfitness to hold office and to recommend disciplinary action to the Supreme Court for any judge whose conduct during term of office warrants such discipline.

Cross Creek Park to get major upgrades

TAMPA – Hillsborough County broke ground Aug. 30 on a project that will transform Cross Creek Park.

The centerpiece of the $8.7 million upgrade will be a new 16,000-square-foot community center and gymnasium with a fitness room, multipurpose room, multiple classrooms and a covered outdoor space. The old playground will be replaced with a state-of-the-art one, and the project will add a new parking lot, walking path, pavilion, shelter and green space.

The park is in an area that also includes the popular New Tampa Performing Arts Center, John B. Sargeant Sr. Park and Flatwoods Park.
