Rainbow Village 01/27/2016

Rainbow Village hosted a ‘Be a Sport’ dance with music by Buddy Canova. Most of the residents wore their favorite team shirts, and Charles and Phyllis Richardson, and the committee, did a wonderful job decorating and planning the dance. Ron and Sue Leonard sported shirts that showed the year they were married.

Dave and Daphine, from Nashville, performed at Rainbow Village’s first show of the season. The duo played a variety of music from classic country to Broadway, from pop to southern gospel, and from jazz to the blues. The couple took a moment with park manager Sue Flynn and all the usherettes.

Food and games bring residents together

January 20, 2016 By Special to The Laker/Lutz News

On Jan. 8, approximately 75 people met at Texas Roadhouse where we had an enjoyable lunch. There was a huge variety of dishes, and everyone was pleased. The food was tasty and the service was great. This lunch was organized by Sandy and Al Lindke. They did an excellent job, and both of them greeted us upon entering the restaurant. There was so much conversation, and many pictures were taken. Several people took home doggie bags, thereby being able to relive this experience.

The following day, Jan. 9, we had close to 100 people for egg n’ bag. This event is always fun, and conversation flows throughout the community center. This breakfast was hosted by Jim and Judi Leitzke, and what a superb job was done! They had help from Wally Carlson, Linda Rogers, George and Sue Richardson, Sue and Galen Parker, Carol and Clayton George, Doris Sutfin, and Fred and Sam Sage. Jane and Maurice Thayer usually help out, but they were delayed back North.

The volunteers in different activities keep Grand Horizons going. Jim Leitzke said the prayer before serving the meal, and the breakfast was a fun event.

On Jan. 11, we had a fun and active game of dominoes. There were several tables set up, and everyone had a good time. Again, this is a great time to socialize and mingle while playing a game. This game is organized by Eugene and Nancy Martin. Thanks go out to them and the many other volunteers. Dominoes are played every Monday night.

Welcome to January ?

January 20, 2016 By Special to The Laker/Lutz News

Waking up in another year can be unnerving. Not that this is a new phenomenon by any means, but the clock of life ticks off one more. This is OK, but to add the drop of 30 degrees and top it off with cloudy drizzly mornings makes you ask, welcome to January? We knew that that fellow south of the border, Senor El Nino, was coming to visit and known as a poor houseguest, and would probably hang around for a month or two. Oh well, it could be worse; it could snow.

Looking out the window, however, the rest of the park seems to be acting normally. Our intrepid walkers are wearing down the paths and following their pooches as they chase down their favorite aromas. Life does go on as normal. Well then, let us move on to the last week of 2015.
Those pesky Christmas decorations that we struggled with to untangle are now carefully packed away to guarantee next year will be different. But do not hold your breath. The shed gods will work their magic, and twist and turn them over this summer and laugh in glee when you unpack next November. The park takes on a barren landscape when all is put away. But, what is that fellow next door doing? Oh no. Pink hearts and cupids, and taking out his ladder. Here we go again.
Our new king and queen for 2016 were crowned at the last coffee hour of the year.
Jim and Mary Ann Homrich were a popular choice and well thought of in the park. The first thing you notice when you meet is their almost permanent smiles. We know you will have a happy reign, but you never saw the fine print. This is not a paid position, your crowns and all belong to the association, and on exit, you have to pay closing costs, but the free access to all park functions is non-taxable.
Maggie Johnson, our 2015 queen, is now back home and recovering. Thanks to all who wished her well over the Christmas weeks. Looking forward to seeing her out and about again.
The New Year’s dance, although not sold out, was one of the best we have had. The old saying, if you were not there, too bad for you. It was great. Jim LaPlante did an excellent job as our house disc jockey, with a mix of styles and tunes, and kept the dance floor hopping. Again, the dynamic duo of Toni Fisher and Linda Jenkins put on the show. Hooray for the volunteers.
January is full of activities, so get that rest over these dog days of New Year’s. See you there.

Quilters readying for colorful display

January 20, 2016 By Special to The Laker/Lutz News

Each year, the Leisure Days’ quilters make a special quilt to benefit the Fun Club. This year’s quilt will be on display at the 11th annual Leisure Days Quilt Show on Feb. 6 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Showcasing the 2016 quilt are, back row from left, Rose Knapp, Frances Shearer, Glo Pelley, Joanne Vandenhoek, Marie Taylor, Evalyn Hills and Gail Beebe. The Leisure Days’ quilters have been busy getting ready for the show, and once again, the hall will be transformed into a rainbow of colors, from the numerous quilts on display. Along with the quilts, other quilted items also will be displayed.

These quilters also make numerous quilts for the young and old in the Zephyrhills community. A popular design this year is the “Patchalot” quilt, made up of 2 ½ squares.

The instant win table, a popular stop for the visitors, will be available during the show.

Conveyor Marie Henhoeffer invites everyone, once they have admired the quilts on display, to enjoy a cup of tea with the Leisure Days’ quilters and to watch a demonstration of hand quilting.

Leisure Days RV Resort is located on Morris Bridge Road, at State Road 54, in Zephyrhills.

Sparkling cider and birthdays

January 20, 2016 By Special to The Laker/Lutz News

Rainbow Village started the New Year with Chrissy Hariman playing her great music for all of us to dance to.

We celebrated two birthdays at the dance — Edie Dayton’s birthday on New Year’s Eve and Dick Poulin’s on New Year’s Day.

Brent Jones had a great time dancing around the floor with several ladies trying to put money in his belt. He was such a tremendous sport! Bottles of sparkling apple cider were shared at each table for a toast at midnight.

A big thank you to Arlene Jones and her great committee for planning a wonderful New Year’s Eve dance.

It was a great way to ring in 2016, dancing to Chrissy’s music and enjoying the fellowship of our Rainbow Village family.

Oh, the weather outside is wonderful

The rest of the country was not enjoying the last few weeks as much as the lucky few of us snowbirds lolling in the Florida sun, but boy, has it not been grand? Some of the old sages in the park fondly reminisced about all the winters they had in days gone by, when the cold winds never arrived and only a sweater or two could be seen. Good story, but we will take this any day. This is the reason we came, to escape winter, and this is exactly why we were enjoying it to the limit.

Christmas was not even out of the distant past yet, and summer activities were still abounding. Gatherings of like-minded people were everywhere. Parties had even started up by just taking down a neighbor’s Christmas decorations and then rolling into a happy hour. Mary Ann and Charles Evans, new in the park this year, from Indiana, brought her electric piano and rhythm maker down to John and Pat Sweet to entertain happy hour friends. Rick Carrey brought a guitar, Cliff Pryde brought an amp and mike, with his trusty guitar in tow, to form an ensemble. Shorts and short-sleeved shirts were mandatory, and all joined in the hootenanny to sing songs, practice karaoke, dance some steps and, of course, hoist a few frosties. Hey, it was a nice way to pass a December afternoon, especially outside in 85-degree heat. Throughout the park on any afternoon, you heard people enjoying it (warm weather) while we had it. However, it is coming. Those northern winds are at the door. Get out and enjoy the warmth and your neighbors.

On another note, our new king and queen for 2016 were crowned at the morning coffee hour. Jim and Mary Ann Homrich are an active couple in the park, and have been involved for many years. The first thing you notice is their smiles. They are contagious. Jim, for many years, took on the lead of our golf league, a challenging time-consuming job. Thanks for your service from all the duffers. Jim and Mary Ann still have not been told yet, but all the crowns and regalia are not theirs to keep, but free admission to all activities will be nontaxable. Whoopee! Have a great reign.

Our outgoing queen, Maggie Johnson, has not enjoyed the best December, but is improving as this is written. Fast recovery Maggie. Looking forward to seeing you up soon.

This was also the time to make resolutions for 2016. We all have sworn off something sinful in the past, but at our age, we have little sin left to give up, so this year the resolution is to hopefully keep what we have. What is wrong with real butter on toast, a glass of wine, or a chocolate or two? We might be able to keep these.

Did you hear the music coming up the road from the rec hall? Happy New Year one and all from the residents, park management and corporate.

Welcoming the New Year Grand Horizons style

January 13, 2016 By Special to The Laker/Lutz News

Many residents attended a New Year’s Eve celebration at our community center on Dec. 31. Barb Livingston, Carol Wilcox and Annmarie Shackewyc hosted the party. A great deal of work was put into these preparations, and the party ran smoothly.

The entire community center was decorated nicely with black fabric chair covers and white tablecloths. In the center of the tables there were lanterns with white and black accents. The centerpieces were made by Barb and Annmarie. The idea of the black and white was thought about previously, and when it came time to decorate the community center, it was done by Carol Wilcox, Cheryl Leone, Barb Livingston and Annmarie Shackewyc.

Billy Cole was the disc jockey/singer for the evening, and he sang a variety of songs. He has a good voice and took many requests.

There was plenty of dancing and 16 prizes were awarded. The prizes consisted of a free breakfast and more. A snack tray, plus chips, was provided, but everyone brought something for the table. When leaving the community center, people went home to the sound of fireworks shooting up to the sky.

On Jan. 5, bingo games started up once again, and the first game of the year was presented. We have a new committee, and bingo will be every Tuesday. There is so much fun during the games, and it’s also a good opportunity to socialize.

Also on Jan. 5, 15 women gathered at the community center to go and have a meal at The Great Catch. The meal and the company was excellent, and the menu consisted of a variety of tasty dishes. The waitresses were very helpful if anyone had a question. This outing was organized by Barbara Janelle, and our thanks go out to her. Everyone had a lovely time conversing and mingling with one another.

Serving up a beautiful Christmas

January 6, 2016 By Special to The Laker/Lutz News

The week of Christmas was very busy at Rainbow Village. Dick and Sandy Abel had the large trailer all trimmed with Christmas decorations, waiting for Reggie Short to hook it up to his truck. Then, the Rainbow helpers put some picnic tables on it so the carolers could sit and sing the carols, while we went up and down the lanes in Rainbow Village singing to all those that were waiting to listen. It was a lot of fun sharing the “Reason for the Season” along the lanes in Rainbow Village.

Our worship service choir was in charge of our Christmas Eve service. Our choir director, Bev Were, brought a really nice program from Canada. A very memorable moment was when Laureen Hutt sang “Mary, Did You Know?” to the mother of baby Jesus. The choir sang and the congregation sang along with the carols that were sung. It was a beautiful service to help celebrate the birth of Jesus.

Doug Jones prepared our annual Christmas ham dinner. In addition to the ham, each person brought a dish to share for a table of 12. The tables were beautifully decorated. We had a full house for the Christmas dinner. Our Rainbow Village family is very special at this time of year, especially when our families are scattered all over the country. A big thank you to Doug for all of his work. Thanks to all who helped set up tables, clean up and serve, and to those that prepared meals for our shut-ins.

Rich Berkheiser lead the singing, with the help of Sandy Abel, while caroling around the resort on Christmas Eve.

The big winners in our Christmas lighting contest were Jerry and Debbie Kirsch for the best decorated mobile home, and Jay and Karen Sharon for the best decorated RV. Congratulations to the winners.

We at Rainbow Village hope the New Year will be great for you all.
