National parks offer lessons in life, history

May 10, 2017 By Kathy Steele

The nation’s history is recorded in books and taught in classrooms — but, author Penny Musco recommends another path of discovery.

She suggests that you visit as many of the 417 properties in the U.S. National Parks Services as possible.

That list includes 59 parks, 87 monuments, 15 rivers, three scenic trails, four battlefield parks, 11 battlefields, 78 historic sites, and thousands of recreational areas.

Musco, who lives in Sarasota, summed it up like this: “It’s our history.”

Sarasota resident Penny Musco was guest lecturer at the Zephyrhills Public Library, where she discussed her book, ‘Life Lessons from the National Parks: Meeting God in America’s Most Glorious Places.’
(Kathy Steele)

She went on to say, “sometimes it’s more interesting to learn our history when you’re somewhere history occurred rather than in a classroom. That’s what makes it come alive.”

Musco is author of “Life Lessons from the National Parks: Meeting God in America’s Most Glorious Places.”

She was guest lecturer at the Zephyrhills Public Library on April 19.

She also is a former artist-in-residence for the National Park Service.

She spent six weeks in Nebraska researching the “exodusters,” blacks who migrated to Kansas and other states west of the Mississippi River after the Civil War. The Homestead Act of 1862 provided land grants of 160 acres to all Americans, including former slaves and women.

During her residency, Musco wrote “Steal Away,” a one-woman show on homesteaders and exodusters. She occasionally performs at events for Black History Month or Women’s History Month.

She wrote her book in 2016 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service.

The variety of properties operated by the park service often surprises people, who tend to only think of the national parks, such as the Grand Canyon or Yosemite.

There are many other properties to visit that are less widely known, Musco said.

For instance, the national historic site commemorating the Supreme Court desegregation decision in Brown v. Board of Education is in Topeka, Kansas.

“It has a lot of multi-media. It’s a really good place to go,” she said.

Another plus? The site is free, Musco said.

Another free attraction — which was the country’s most visited park property in 2016 — is the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

About 15.6 million people visit that each year, Musco said.

The Grand Canyon ranks No. 8 for most visitors; Yosemite, No. 12; and the Lincoln Memorial, No. 6.

The Blue Ridge Parkway – No. 2 in visitors – follows a scenic route for more than 400 miles through the Shenandoah National Park within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The Smoky Mountains became a national park in the 1930s — as automobiles became a popular mode of travel.

Park service officials wanted to have a national park located in a populated area, unlike the western parks that had far fewer, if any, residents.

“Most Americans wanted to go somewhere in their automobiles,” Musco said.

Donations from the states of Tennessee and North Carolina, average citizens, and John D. Rockefeller Jr., helped buy the land. The park’s creation came with controversy, as about 1,200 people were displaced.

“People lived in the hollers in the Great Smokies,” Musco said.

About 70 log-built structures remain.

Today, the Great Smoky Mountains is the largest protected land area east of the Rocky Mountains.

In Florida, a popular spot is the Hernando de Soto National Memorial, near the Sarasota-Bradenton airport. The site marks the spot where the Spanish explorer came ashore in Tampa Bay in 1539.

The Dry Tortugas National Park is an island fortress south of the Florida Keys, accessible by ferry or seaplane. Dr. Samuel Mudd, convicted as a conspirator in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, served time on the island until his pardon in 1869.

Musco said Cuban refugees fleeing Castro would sail small boats to the island to seek asylum in the closest place to mainland United States.

It is one of the least visited parks but, Musco said, “It’s architecturally a magnificent place. The aquatic life is beautiful. It’s an all-day adventure.”

Her personal favorite is the Grand Canyon.

“It is so immense and so hard to wrap your mind around the scale,” she said.

Musco also loves the opportunities for free or reduced cost passes issued by the park service.

Seniors age 62 and older qualify for $10 lifetime passes. (There is a proposal to increase that fee to $80). Free passes are available to military; permanently disabled; and, fourth graders (age 10) and their families from Sept. 1 through Aug. 31.

Parks also are free on President’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday and on Aug. 25 for the National Park Service’s birthday.

International award
The Pasco Economic Development Council received a Bronze Excellence in Economic Development Award for Business Retention & Expansion-Single Event at this year’s International Economic Development Council Annual Conference.

The award honors the combined efforts of Pasco EDC with community partners, including Pasco County, New Port Richey, and Duke Energy, to keep Applicant Insight in New Port Richey. The company is the city’s largest employer.

“This award serves as a salute to pacesetting organizations like the Pasco Economic Development Council for leading the charge,” said JoAnn Carary, in a press release from Pasco EDC. Carary is chairwoman of International Economic Development Council (IEDC) and president of Saginaw Future Inc.

The IEDC is a nonprofit membership organization serving economic developers.

Representatives of Applicant Insight had begun to search new sites for relocation. But, Pasco EDC representatives met with company officials to discuss issues of concern, including the need for a larger facility, as well as crime and safety.

Pasco exploring bringing all advertising signs to the ground

May 1, 2014 By Michael Hinman

More than a decade after she led a crusade to lower new business advertising signs in Pasco County, Kathryn Starkey is gearing up to bring the “grandfathered” ones up to code.

It’s usually Golden Arches in the sky when there’s a McDonald’s around. But the newest McDonald’s at 1733 Bruce B. Downs Boulevard in Wesley Chapel has a sign at ground level, thanks to a Pasco County ordinance, and the early efforts of Pasco County Commissioner Kathryn Starkey. (Michael Hinman/Staff Photo)

The county commissioner says it’s time her colleagues start looking into enforcing the sign laws — which typically limit sign height at 11 feet — uniformly across Pasco, including those signs that pre-date the 2003 changes to the ordinance. Starkey, however, says she won’t push it without trying to find at least some help for business owners, who would have to invest in new signs.

“One of the biggest complaints I get is the old signs that are still up, so we got to figure out a way to help those businesses bring those signs to our new look,” Starkey said. “It’s difficult. It’s a financial investment, but I think we should incentivize them to bring them up to the current code.”

How to incentivize those businesses is still a big question mark, but one possibility could be offering small grants or even low-interest microloans to help defray the costs, Starkey said.

Businesses with grandfathered signs have been allowed to keep them as long as they are not changed in a way that would make them become “more non-conforming” to the ordinance. After 11 years, some of those signs are starting to show their age, and are looking more and more out of place in areas where ground-level, or monument, signs have become the norm.

Starkey’s original goal was to prevent the growing Wesley Chapel area from becoming what U.S. 19 is on the western side of the county. Because of Wesley Chapel’s proximity to Interstate 75, early signs would create what Starkey called “circuses in the sky,” to be visible to interstate travelers still a couple miles away.

Instead, Starkey — through her activist group Scenic Pasco — influenced the way the county looked at both business signs and billboards, all before she first sought elected office. That work brought Wesley Chapel more in-line with the standards of neighboring New Tampa, and prevented some roads like State Road 54 and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard from being littered with high road advertising signs, each one trying to outdo its neighbors.

Fortunately, a good portion of Wesley Chapel was developed after the ordinance went into effect, so many of the problems involving grandfathered signs are not present in Wesley Chapel. But as Starkey heads west, first through Land O’ Lakes, and then toward U.S. 19 — with the new development of Trinity one of the lone exceptions — she gradually finds signs creeping higher and higher, and it’s something she wants to finally get fixed.

“In September, we’re having our first community meeting about redevelopment, and I think we’ll start exploring the ideas of how we can help people not only deal with their signs, but maybe help them to figure out how to improve their landscaping and even the architecture in their buildings,” Starkey said.

The change in business signs and billboards helped not only Pasco to grow, but property values as well, she said.

“I’m very glad that we had a county commission at the time that was willing to take the political hit from some who didn’t want to change the way they were doing business,” Starkey said. “But it’s made such a difference. We have to have ordinances like this because it really does affect our quality of life, and how other people see us. Otherwise, what it says to me is that we don’t care about how we look.”

Satisfying Cinderella’s sweet tooth

Culinary students vie for a trip to the ball

By B.C. Manion

The culinary artists were aflutter in the kitchen, putting on the last-minute flourishes on creative confections they hoped would woo judges’ votes.

Twelve teams were vying for the top three honors in the second annual Cinderella’s Favorite Dessert competition, held Thursday night at the Academy of Culinary Arts at Land O’ Lakes High.

“As you can see back there, this is like opening night for a play,’’ said Pasco County School Board Chairwoman Joanne Hurley, nodding toward the kitchen as the teams plated their desserts.

“Everything is going on and they’re all doing their last-minute preparations. Excitement is in the air,” Hurley said.

Teams from Marchman Technical Education Center and Land O’ Lakes, Fivay, Hudson, Wiregrass Ranch and Anclote high schools put their culinary skills to the test in a quest to have their dessert chosen to be served at the upcoming Cinderella Ball.

That black-tie gala is an evening of elegance put on by the Pasco Education Foundation to raise money for scholarships, classroom grants and recognition programs. This year, the ball will be held on March 3 at Heritage Springs Country Club.

Beyond creating a tasty dessert, each team obviously put thought into how their creation would fit nicely into the theme of Cinderella’s ball.

While washing dishes at a stainless steel sink before making her case to the judges, Land O’ Lakes High senior Gordon ran through the lines she would speak.

Whenever she stumbled, she started again. She was determined to get it right.

She was confident that she and her partner, Lindsey Monson, had dreamed up a delectable dessert for the contest.

The pair named their entry “Cinderella’s Spectacular Sampler.”

And, it did look delicious.

The sampler included a pumpkin cheesecake, to represent the carriage; a Black Forest cake pop to represent Germany, home of the castle Walt Disney used as a model for Cinderella’s castle; and dressed up a strawberry in a tuxedo, to represent the prince.

While others rushed about, Wiregrass Ranch High student Kaileigh Skinner seemed to have everything under control.

While others were rushing to finish, she had completed plating her petit fours, which she called “Sweet Surprises.”

Each plate had four petit fours made of cake and fillings, covered with chocolate. She used raspberry, mango and kiwi lime fruit fillings and one filling made of caramel.

Skinner did not seem to be sweating it, even though her partner, Sylvia Pardo, could not attend the event.

“I’m actually the only one ready now,” Skinner said. “I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.”

As teams presented their entries, the energy and thought they’d put into their work was obvious.

First place went to Brooke Dobbyn and Burgandy Mills, a team from Anclote High, for a dessert they called Prince’s Golden Mocha Layer Cake.

The Land O’ Lakes High team of Ashlee Hubert and Ariana Powell-Lindo took second place, while third place went to Danielle Sneve, Cody Hindman and Sara Schiff, with an alternate, Bailey Bryant.

The second-place dessert from Land O’ Lakes High is called “Lady Tremaine’s German chocolate cake.” It consists of German chocolate cake, a coconut pecan filling and a border made of ladyfingers.

Hubert, a junior, presented the dessert to the judges. Her teammate, Ariana Powell-Lindo, was unable to attend the event.

“What was your idea of having the ladyfinger border?” judge Aaron R. Fodiman asked.

Hubert: “We decided that would give it an elegant look,” Hubert said.

“And that it does,” Fodiman said.

Hubert was delighted by her team’s success.

“I’m very surprised,” she said. “I’m happy. I’m just like a bundle of joy.”

She wasn’t the only one who was feeling good at Thursday’s event.

The man who oversees the school district’s culinary arts programs had a broad smile on his face, when the students finished their pitches.

“I’m standing back here as proud as I can be,” said Rob Aguis, the director of community, career and technical education for Pasco County Schools. “They all did a wonderful job.”
