Woodard picks Georgetown

October 18, 2012 By Special to The Laker/Lutz News

By Kyle LoJacono

Freedom senior girls basketball player Faith Woodard committed to Georgetown University Oct. 14 on her 18th birthday.

Woodard, a 6-foot-2 senior forward, made the announcement via Twitter: “Officially a Georgetown Hoya! Just verbally committed! I’m all in.”

Woodard transferred from Riverview during the summer. She averaged 21.4 points, 11 rebounds, four steals, 3.1 blocks and three assists last year. She also won the Class 4A state high jump championship as a junior by clearing 5-feet 8-inches.

Georgetown is a Division-1 program in the Big East Conference. Woodard also had major interest from the University of South Florida, another Big East team.

Patriots fourth-year coach Laurie Pacholke said Woodard is the first player in the program’s 10-year history to commit to a program in one of the so-called power six conferences, which are the same as the BCS leagues for college football. She is also the second to pick a Division-I program, following Pacholke’s daughter, Kaitlynn, who signed with Jacksonville State University following the 2009-10 season.
