End of summer family adventures

August 6, 2024 By Special to The Laker/Lutz News

As summer starts to wind down, it’s the perfect time to create lasting memories with your family. With the weather still warm and the days long, you have a golden opportunity to embark on fun, adventurous activities before the school year and cooler temperatures begin. Here are some engaging and enjoyable end-of-summer family adventures to make the most of the remaining sunshine.

1. Outdoor movie night

Transform your backyard into a cozy outdoor movie theater. Set up a projector and screen (or a white sheet), and arrange blankets and lawn chairs for seating. Prepare some popcorn, snacks and drinks, and let the whole family enjoy a favorite film under the stars. For added fun, consider a themed movie night with costumes or a selection of summer classics.

2. Beach or lake day

Spend a day at the beach or lake soaking up the sun and enjoying water activities. Pack a picnic, beach toys and sunscreen. Whether you’re building sandcastles, playing beach volleyball or just relaxing by the water, a day at the beach or lake is a classic summer adventure that the whole family will love.

3. Family hiking excursion

Explore nature by taking a family hike on a nearby trail. Choose a trail suitable for all fitness levels and enjoy the beautiful scenery and fresh air. Bring along a nature guidebook to identify local wildlife and plants, or pack a journal to record your observations and experiences. A picnic at the end of the trail is a great way to reward everyone’s efforts.

4. Visit a local farm or farmer’s market

Take a trip to a local farm or farmer’s market to explore fresh produce and farm animals. Many farms offer pick-your-own fruit or vegetable experiences, which can be both educational and fun. After your visit, use your fresh finds to cook a meal together, highlighting the journey from farm to table.

5. Plan a family camping trip

If you haven’t yet been camping this summer, now’s a great time to plan a family camping trip. Whether you choose a state park, a campground or even your own backyard, camping is a fantastic way to bond as a family. Enjoy activities like hiking, fishing, s’mores by the campfire and stargazing.

6. Explore a nearby city or town

Take a day trip to explore a nearby city or town that you haven’t visited before. Check out local attractions, museums, parks or historical sites. This can be an exciting way to learn about new places and create special family memories. Be sure to visit a local eatery or café to get a taste of the area’s cuisine.

7. Host a family talent show

Unleash your family’s creativity by hosting a talent show at home. Each family member can prepare and perform their unique talent, whether it’s singing, dancing, magic tricks or comedy. Set up a stage area and create tickets and programs for a fun, organized event. Celebrate everyone’s performances with a small awards ceremony or a special treat.

8. Go on a scavenger hunt

Create a scavenger hunt that takes your family on a quest around your neighborhood or a local park. Make a list of items or landmarks to find and provide clues or riddles to guide them along the way. This can be a great way to explore familiar places with a new perspective and enjoy some friendly competition.

9. Try a new water sport

If your family enjoys being in the water, consider trying a new water sport like paddleboarding, kayaking or snorkeling. Many rental places offer equipment and lessons for beginners. Trying something new can be an exciting adventure and a chance to learn a new skill together.

10. Plan a DIY arts and crafts day

Spend a creative day indoors by tackling a DIY arts and crafts project as a family. Choose a project that interests everyone, such as painting, making jewelry or building a birdhouse. Gather supplies and set up a crafting station where everyone can contribute their ideas and creations.

The end of summer is a fantastic opportunity to make the most of the remaining warm days and create lasting memories with your family. Whether you’re enjoying outdoor adventures, exploring new places or simply having fun at home, these activities will help you celebrate the season and make the most of the time spent together. So gather your family, plan your adventures and enjoy the final moments of summer together.

Dade City considers new city manager to replace Leslie Porter

August 6, 2024 By Joe Potter

Dade City is considering hiring a new city manager by Oct. 1 to replace Leslie Porter, who is currently in the process of negotiating a separation agreement with the city.

Porter became city manager on May 14, 2019 and was hired after serving as interim city manager for a few months following the departure of William “Billy” Poe. Porter has worked for Dade City for more than 10 years. She was the city’s finance director from 2014-2019 prior to assuming her administrative position.

City Attorney Patrick Brackins is negotiating a mutual, amicable separation agreement with Porter and her attorney. The city commission won’t make a decision on that agreement until it has been finalized and presented to them for their consideration. It’s not immediately known how much time it will take for the agreement to be prepared.

Porter’s proposed separation is due to a consensus reached by city commissioners to take the city in a different direction, according to a commissioner who spoke confidentially given the separation agreement hasn’t been finalized yet.

Porter has faced public criticism, which has led to controversy surrounding her tenure.

Remarks made during the public comment portions of some city commission meetings allege that Porter had not handled personnel matters in a proper manner. Some former city employees claimed they had been let go because of a disagreement they had with Porter, while others claimed to not even know why they had been terminated. Also, some former employees said they were unable to either gain back their former jobs, or be hired for new ones, because they were ignored when applying for reemployment.

Porter has previously said personnel records are public records that may be viewed under most circumstances. She added that those records show why decisions were made to terminate former city employees.

When the separation agreement has been prepared and agreed to by the city and Porter, her departure will not be the result of a “termination for cause or for misconduct,” Brackins told city commissioners during their July 23 meeting. One part of the agreement could be that Porter would be eligible to be reemployed in the future if she applied for a position for which she was qualified for, given her education or experience, Brackins said.

Both Mayor Scott Black and Commissioner Ann Cosentino said they thought Oct. 1, the start of its new fiscal year 2024–2025, would be a good date for Porter to step aside as city manager if a replacement had been hired at that time.

But a majority of city commissioners also are in favor of Porter continuing to serve as city manager for 30 days after a new one has been hired. This is to ensure there is a smooth transition between the two administrators because of the amount of responsibilities involved. That time can be extended if a replacement isn’t hired by Oct. 1.

Commissioner Kristin Church emphasized the importance of having the opening for the position widely advertised so quality applicants could be found to choose from when the search does begin.

Mayor Pro Tem Normita “Angel” Woodard said she would like it to be required that the new city manager who is selected live in Dade City, as this would give him or her an opportunity to get to know the community better.

Porter has lived in Tampa during her tenure as city manager.

“God has a purpose and a plan for me,” Porter said in an emailed statement on July 30.

“Life is a journey, and I am excited to see where my next path will lead. Seasons change, and the commission is looking to move in a new direction. I can respect that choice.

“I am proud of what we have accomplished in the city during my tenure both in finance and city administration. Throughout my career, my actions and decisions have been driven by what I believe is best for the city. I will miss the city, community members and staff. The staff is an amazing group of dedicated public servants, and I wish them all the best,” Porter said.

Pedestrian Hazards on Florida Roads

February 27, 2024 By Brand Partner Content

As the number of Florida citizens working to improve their fitness by walking increases, risks to the health of these pedestrians continue to climb. Limited access to sidewalks and walking paths in some locations increase hazards, as do bicycles, scooters and skateboards on walking paths.

Considering Pedestrian Goals

There are pedestrians who walk for the joy of stretching their legs. There are pedestrians who have a pet that needs some exercise. Finally, there are pedestrians that need to walk to the local market for a grocery pickup.

All of these people can increase their safety by increasing their visibility. For those who want to walk early in the day to avoid the heat, highly visible clothing can help. A white or reflective ball cap is a simple first step to being seen. If you need a jacket, add reflective strips to it to draw the eye of drivers. A reflective vest can also make you more visible.

Your dog can also use protection, such as a harness with a reflective strip. Add a blinking solar light to their leash or invest in a reflective dog leash to create a visual distraction. The driver may not see the crosswalk until they see the blinking light, but they will be drawn out of driver hypnosis and brought into the awareness of their surroundings.

If you have a personal shopping cart, a walker or another device that comes with you on each trip, load it up with reflective lights. A flashing string of holiday lights on your grocery cart could be exactly what you need to get a smile from the clerk and be seen by drivers.

Colorful Crosswalks

Those who need to walk on roadways that also include cars should always use the crosswalk. Take the time to hit the button so you have enough time to cross safely with the light. Avoid any diagonal travel across several lanes; even if there aren’t cars coming, your risk of a fall and of lingering in the path of oncoming traffic will be increased during a diagonal crossing.

Another defensive step for walkers is to keep an eye on right turn lanes. Florida, like most states, allows a right turn on red. For pedestrians, this can be extremely hazardous. The driver is watching for oncoming traffic and noting that the light is still red. They may not be watching the crosswalk. If you see a driver creeping into the crosswalk to make a right turn on red, give them a wave. If bright, colorful crosswalks that include a visual barrier have a history of making drivers aware. If roads are a dark asphalt, a light concrete or red brick crosswalk can draw the eye of drivers. Curved sections of concrete or another source of visual contrast can also draw the eye.

Pay Attention to the Sun

The bright Florida sun is a great gift to the plant life and the tourism industry. However, it can be a terrible hazard for pedestrians. Those driving into the morning sun on Florida streets may struggle to notice pedestrian crosswalks.

Stoplights are easy to see; other cars on the road may be slowing down in front of you to increase your awareness. However, a crosswalk light can be tough to notice if you’re driving directly into the sun. Pedestrians at crosswalks can be at risk of inattentive drivers and those blinded by sunlight. Do your best, as a pedestrian, to be eye-catching so you can make drivers aware of yellow and red crosswalk lights.

Uninsured Drivers Are on the Rise

Recent jumps in the price of car insurance have left some Florida drivers with difficult choices. Drivers may choose to go without insurance, leaving pedestrians and their fellow drivers in a hazardous spot.

The number of hit and run accidents in Florida are on the rise. In 2022, the state saw 144 pedestrians killed in hit-and-run accidents. Many of these accidents include bicycles as well as pedestrians. Whether a driver leaves the scene of a pedestrian strike due to negligence or because they fear penalties for their lack of insurance, the risk to pedestrians remains the same. Vigilance on the part of drivers and walkers alike is key to lowering these risks.

No matter the reason for your walk, you have a right to share the road with vehicles. Knowing your right of way is helpful, but being ready to give it up can save your life. Because drivers can be distracted, pedestrians face greater hazards. Protect yourself by being a defensive walker as you travel the streets of Florida cities.

Florida Legislature Passes Law Ending Permanent Alimony

December 4, 2023 By Brand Partner Content

One of the frequent issues in divorces that occur in Florida is spousal support, otherwise known as “alimony.” Nonetheless, there’s been a recent development. In June 2023, Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill that does away with the concept of making permanent alimony payments.

Although it has been widely assumed that alimony is an integral part of Florida divorces, this new legislation alters the landscape. It means that the granting of alimony, particularly in a permanent manner, will no longer be the norm.

What is Florida SB 1416?

In the past, the legal framework in Florida has acknowledged the necessity, under specific circumstances, for one spouse to make alimony payments to the other. When judges deliberated on matters concerning alimony, they typically took two primary factors into account:

  • The financial needs of one spouse.
  • The capability of the other spouse to provide financial support.

Once these criteria were established, a range of alimony was often granted, from temporary alimony payments meant to “bridge the gap” in the transition period to permanent alimony payments to be made on an ongoing basis.

However, with the passage of SB 1416, spouses are no longer required to pay permanent alimony. Not only that, but it adds other conditions when considering alimony rewards:

  • Adultery can serve as a consideration for the court when determining the amount of alimony to be granted.
  • One spouse needs to present sufficient evidence demonstrating their eligibility for alimony.
  • Changes to a parenting plan or schedule are possible, even in situations where the circumstances were initially anticipated.
  • If the person paying alimony gets married or lives with a romantic partner, the court might lower or stop the payments.
  • Similarly, if the individual responsible for alimony payments retires, the court holds the authority to decrease or halt the said payments.

How Will the Removal of Permanent Alimony Affect Florida Divorces?

Certainly, many Florida divorces will now feel the impact of the removal of permanent alimony. While it might not decrease the number of divorces, this new law will no doubt have an effect on the decision-making process for both couples and judges considering alimony.

Thus, for those getting divorced in Florida, it’s important to understand how alimony is decided and then awarded by judges. Typically, they look at things like the:

  • Lifestyle both before and during the marriage
  • Length of the marriage
  • Age, health, and other personal characteristics of each spouse.
  • Financial situation of each spouse, including income, assets, and debts.
  • Earning capacity of each spouse
  • Contributions both spouses made to the marriage

Most courts also consider any additional relevant factors, like the availability of other financial resources or significant debts, when making a decision on alimony. Florida courts examine these factors to make a decision about alimony, but with the passage of the new law, the complexity of the issue has increased..

How the Elite Are Setting New Trends During the Economic Downturn

February 21, 2023 By From Staff Reports

The concept of “recession core” has become a growing trend among the elite. Recession core is a lifestyle focused on the appreciation of quality over quantity, emphasizing the value of experiences and thriftiness when it comes to spending money. Since the recession of 2008, recession core has become increasingly popular among those who have the financial means to spend money on luxury items, but choose instead to invest their funds in more meaningful, sustainable purchases. The idea is that a person can still live a luxurious lifestyle without breaking the bank, and instead focus on building meaningful relationships, experiences, and investments. The elite have embraced recession core for its ability to help them save money without sacrificing their lifestyle, and for its ability to bring a sense of social responsibility to the way they spend their money.
