Knott’s Berry Farm New Chaperone Policy

July 20, 2022 By Isai Rocha

LA Weekly’s Isai Rocha reports on the new chaperone policy enacted by a Southern California family theme park plagued by unruly teens. The popular Knott’s Berry Farm has seen an increase of teens fighting, causing major safety concerns for the park and its guests. In an effort to put a stop to the dangerous behavior, Knott’s has implemented a stringent chaperone policy for all park-goers under the age of 18 years old. Previously, the park had been a popular spot for teens to be dropped off. Families are applauding the new rule, making it safer to visit the park.

“For decades, Knott’s Berry Farm has been a place where families and friends come together to enjoy a one-of-a-kind park full of homegrown experiences and immersive entertainment,” the park said in a statement. “Millions of guests have counted on us for wholesome family fun, and we’re committed to keeping that promise going forward. As part of that commitment, the park will implement a chaperone policy beginning Friday, July 22, 2022, remaining in effect on Fridays and Saturdays until further notice.”

Remembering Howie Pyro

July 13, 2022 By Jesse Malin

In this Village Voice piece, New York singer songwriter Jesse Malin pays homage to his good friend, the enigmatic music legend, Howie Pyro. “Howie is in every song I sing,” writes Malin. “The lyrics remind me of our story. He’s on the streets I walk down. He’s in every crooked, creaky apartment we shared. Every light post I pass that we put a flyer on. Every restaurant we sat in. He’s in my dreams, talking to me, making jokes. I wake up and I want to call him, but I can’t.”

“If there’s a heaven, Howie is on the guest list. He’s hanging out with the coolest people, turning them on to Andre Williams, Rat Fink, and L7. And he’s looking out for all of us down here still.”

Brett Callwood Writes: Porno For Pyros Forever

July 12, 2022 By Tara Finley

Porno for Pyros: a beloved band whose music has withstood the test of time for many. L.A. Weekly Music Editor Brett Callwood reminisces on the band’s journey after enjoying their most recent show. “The gig at the Belasco in Downtown L.A. on Thursday night felt much more like an event than a regular concert,” writes Callwood. “In some ways, it recalled the glorious underground celebration that was early Lollapalooza, Jim Rose Circus Sideshow and all.”

“The stage and indeed the crowd was a glorious sea of drag queens and assorted dancers,” he continues. “Men on stilts with oversized guitars. Angels. Devils. The night was dubbed Heaven After Dark, and the MC for the evening told us that it is indeed a little slice of heaven. It certainly felt like that, and that was a much needed feeling in the wake of the Supreme Court’s recent horseshit, plus COVID, Trump and everything else. Heaven will do just fine thank you Perry.”

California To Become Reproductive Safe Haven

June 28, 2022 By Tara Finley

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed an executive order making the state a “reproductive safe haven” for pregnant persons residing outside its borders.

“California will not back down from the fight to protect abortion rights as more than half the states in this country, enabled by the Supreme Court, ban or severely restrict access,” said Governor Gavin Newsom Monday. “We are ensuring Californians will have the opportunity this November to enshrine the right to choose in our state constitution.”

Following the recent SCOTUS decision, California will allow its voters to decide if abortion and contraception rights may be added to the state constitution during the November elections. Specifically, the measure asks “the state shall not deny or interfere with an individual’s reproductive freedom in their most intimate decisions, which includes their fundamental right to choose to have an abortion and their fundamental right to choose or refuse contraceptives.”
