Dave Chappelle Attacked Onstage

May 4, 2022 By Tara Finley

Dave Chappelle was attacked while performing live onstage during his “Netflix is a Joke” show. The LAPD idefited 23-year-old Isiah Lee as the man seen rushing the Hollywood Bowl stage on Tuesday night, tackling the comedian to the ground. According to their statement, LAPD indicated that Lee was in possession of a knife that looked like a replica gun at the time of his arrest. He was arrested for the charge of assault with a deadly weapon, pending trial.

“As unfortunate and unsettling as the incident was, Chappelle went on with the show. Jamie Foxx and Chris Rock helped calm the crowd with humor before Chappelle introduced the last and featured musical guests for the evening, hip-hop artists yasiin bey and Talib Kweli, a.k.a. Black Star, who performed music from their new album – the first in nearly 24 years – which was released on Luminary,” The statement read. “This run ties Chappelle with Monty Python for the most headlined shows by any comedian at the Hollywood Bowl, reaching 70,000 fans of diverse backgrounds during the first Netflix Is A Joke: The Festival.”

Artist Julian Schnabel Sits Down With Shana Nys Dambrot

May 3, 2022 By Tara Finley

L.A.Weekly acclaimed Art Editor Shana Nys Dambrot latest piece dives into the wonderful world of artist Julian Schnabel as he begins his gallery residency. Dambrot writes: “When someone says “Julian Schnabel” in certain circles, his name invokes those infamous smashed ceramics paintings that literally broke the concept of surface into smithereens, turning late-stage East Coast Abstract Expressionism into a spectacle of ambition, rebellion, and theatricality caught in a Newtonian struggle with gravity and alchemy.” The public has a chance to experience Shnabel’s work at his prismatic 2022 mixed media works on velvet at Pace Gallery’s Los Angeles location. Dambrot reviews the work as serving both beauty and an abundance of joy. Click the link below for the full interview.

Shana Nys Dambrot Knows Why They Call It The Music and Arts Festival

April 28, 2022 By Tara Finley

L.A. Weekly Art Editor Shana Nys Dambrot dives into the unique art culture created by Coachella in her latest piece about the 2022 festival. “Coachella has always been uniquely dedicated to a significant visual art presence at its festivals. From the very beginning, one of its creators — the legendary musician, Lollapalooza guru, and avid art lover and collector Perry Farrell — insisted on it, once describing his vision to me as, “ushering in the era of the Art Star.” The subsequent 15 years have more than proved him right, as the art world embraces wilder ideas and the music/spectacle world makes sure to feature visual artists front and center,” she writes.
