Reemployment tax rate remains low

TALLAHASSEE – The Florida Department of Revenue announced Dec. 5 approximately 65% of Florida’s employers will continue to pay the lowest possible rate for reemployment taxes in 2026.

This is the 11th consecutive year employers are benefiting from the low rate of 0.1%. Those contributions go toward a program that helps Florida’s job seekers become reemployed.

Florida’s job growth rate outpaces the national average, which has allowed the state to maintain the minimum reemployment tax rate for businesses.

Employers pay a percentage only on the first $7,000 of wages paid to each employee. Florida is one of only four states with a $7,000 wage base; all remaining states have a higher wage base. Employers with stable employment receive the lowest rate. Reemployment taxes, or payroll taxes, fund Florida’s Reemployment Assistance Trust Fund. This fund has a balance of more than $4.8 billion.

Bill proposes to fund Brand USA

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Reps Kathy Castor and Gus Bilirakis introduced legislation to fully fund Brand USA, the nation’s public-private destination marketing organization.

The bill, titled the VISIT USA Act, would reinstate support by fully allocating Visa Waiver Program Electronic System for Travel Authorization fees, ensuring that Brand USA can continue its mission of promoting the United States as a premier global travel destination.

Brand USA operates through a public-private partnership model, funded by nonfederal contributions from the travel and hospitality industry and matched by a portion of ESTA fees paid by international visitors, not by general taxpayer dollars.

“This bipartisan bill will help restore vital marketing capacity, expand economic opportunity, and keep Tampa Bay and communities across America open and welcoming to travelers who contribute to our shared success,” Castor said.

Bilirakis added: “Fully funding Brand USA is not just smart policy, it’s economic stewardship.”

Duke Energy shares ways to save money

  1. PETERSBURG – Duke Energy offers these tips to save money during the coldest weather:
  • Set your thermostat to the lowest comfortable setting. Every degree lower means more money in your pocket, without sacrificing comfort.
  • Seal leaks and insulate. Prevent cold drafts and keep warmth inside – saving energy and reducing heating bills.
  • Have your heating system checked by a professional. Routine maintenance helps your system operate efficiently, prevents unexpected breakdowns and can extend its lifespan.
  • Change air filters regularly. Clean filters improve airflow and system performance, reducing energy consumption and keeping your home comfortable.
  • Let the sun help heat your home. Open blinds and curtains on sunny days to naturally warm your space, and then close them at night to keep the heat in.
  • Operate ceiling fans clockwise in winter. Push warm air down for greater comfort.

Duke Energy offers customers personalized usage alerts and dashboards to track energy use.
