Florida’s Sports Coast seeks tourism professional

PASCO COUNTY – Pasco County’s Destination Management Organization, Florida’s Sports Coast, is seeking a hotel/motel professional to join the Tourist Development Council.

The TDC is an advisory council to the Pasco Board of County Commissioners and consists of elected officials and tourism industry professionals. They provide recommendations to the staff of Florida’s Sports Coast on promotional/partnership proposals, marketing opportunities and oversight of tourism tax expenditures, also known as the “bed tax.”

Members serve staggered, four-year terms. They meet monthly, alternating between New Port Richey and Dade City. Applicants must live and be registered to vote in Pasco County. Positions are voluntary, with no financial compensation.

“We continue to move Florida’s Sports Coast into the next chapter of the brand,” Executive Director Adam Thomas said. “We look forward to finding a council member who’s committed to the development and future of Pasco County as a destination.”

 

CSEI expands into Land O’ Lakes 

LAND O’ LAKES – Campbell Spellicy Engineering Inc. opened a new office in Land O’ Lakes, marking a significant step forward in the company’s three-year plan.

The mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering firm specializes in commercial, educational, municipal renovation and new construction projects. Its expansion into Land O’ Lakes strengthens its ability to serve clients across the region, while investing in the people and communities that drive its growth. 

“Our expansion into Land O’ Lakes strengthens CSEI’s ability to deliver people-centered, reliable engineering solutions while deepening our investment in the communities where we live and work,” Principal Kevin Spellicy said.

CareerSource Tampa Bay to host fall job fair 

TAMPA – CareerSource Tampa Bay will host a Career Connect Fall Job Fair in celebration of Workforce Development Month.

Tampa makes a splash for zoo conference

TAMPA – Downtown Tampa welcomed nearly 3,000 zoo and aquarium professionals for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Annual Conference.

The conference, held Sept. 13 to 18 at the Tampa Convention Center, was hosted by The Florida Aquarium, ZooTampa at Lowry Park and Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. 

Tampa is one of only three U.S. cities with three AZA-accredited facilities. The city last welcomed the conference in 2006. This year’s event was expected to bring more than $4.5 million into the local economy.

Credit union supports hospital foundation  

TAMPA – GTE Financial is supporting the Tampa General Hospital Foundation in September through its Charity of the Month program. 

GTE Financial will promote member donations and host a Tailgate Touchdown Chili & Cornbread Cook-Off with employees. The organization will also offer month-long raffles.

“We are thrilled to support the foundation’s mission, focused on healing, teaching, innovating and caring for everyone, every day,” said Ashley Watson, chief of staff at GTE Financial. “This partnership gives us the opportunity to not only raise vital funds, but also to come together in celebration of one of the safest and most groundbreaking academic health systems in the United States.”

Each month, the not-for-profit credit union highlights a different employee-selected nonprofit, rallying members and the community to raise money and awareness. 

2025 beneficiaries include the Hispanic Professional Women’s Association, Rescue Pets of Florida, Tighten the Drag Foundation, YMCA, Junior Achievement, LifeLink, Boys & Girls Club, Best Buddies, Tampa General Hospital Foundation, American Heart Association, Crisis Center and Feeding Tampa Bay.

The program has donated more than $2.5 million to organizations since 2019.

PASCO COUNTY – Finding the right job can open doors to exciting opportunities, but navigating the interview process can be overwhelming.  Pasco County Libraries can help.

The library system is teaming up with CareerSource Pasco Hernando to provide free services, like interview preparation, to residents.

CareerSource Re-Employment Assistance is available from 10  a.m. to noon on the following days and venues:

Cafe at 1920 focus on coffee, grab-and-go breakfast

TAMPA – 1920, Ybor City’s premier destination for live music, art, and unforgettable events, has opened a new daytime concept, Cafe at 1920.

Previously home to a tenant-run Attic Cafe that closed on Aug. 17, the space has been transformed and is now operated by 1920 itself. Cafe at 1920 offers a thoughtfully crafted coffee and breakfast experience featuring Wuz Here Coffee, roasted locally, along with a focus on high-quality drinks and grab-and-go breakfast.

SBA launches loans for small manufacturers

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Small Business Administration launched its first loan program dedicated to America’s small manufacturers, which make up 98% of all U.S. manufacturers. 

The 7(a) Manufacturer’s Access to Revolving Credit Loan Program offers flexible working capital with minimal red tape.

“With 98% of American manufacturers classified as small businesses, the new MARC Loans represent a powerful source of targeted capital for those who are growing our nation’s production,” SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler said.

The award recognizes the team’s innovation, professionalism and leadership in public purchasing.

“This award reflects the dedication and strategic thinking of our entire purchasing team,” Purchasing Director Carrie Roberts said. “We work hard to ensure every procurement decision is transparent, efficient and community-focused. It’s an honor to be recognized for that work.”

Florida opens Quota Beverage License Drawing Period

TALLAHASSEE – The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation’s Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco announced the opening of the 2025 Quota Beverage License Drawing Period. 

Each year, new quota beverage licenses are issued to businesses in counties with an increased population, with one new license created for every population increase of 7,500 in each county. This creates an accessible pathway for businesses to become licensed to serve a full range of alcoholic beverages, including beer, wine and spirits.

The drawing includes 52 new licenses in 26 counties, including Pasco and Hillsborough.

Applications are open through Oct. 1 at 5 p.m. on DBPR’s online portal at myfloridalicense.com. Entrants selected will be awarded the right to apply for a license in their county.

 

Florida secures 15th new insurer since reforms

TALLAHASSEE – Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia and Insurance Commissioner Mike Yaworsky announced Viceroy Preferred Insurance Company as Florida’s newest property and casualty insurer. 

Viceroy is domiciled in Florida and approved to write homeowners’ multi-peril and dwelling fire policies. It is the 15th insurer to enter the market since Florida’s legislative reforms.

“Florida’s insurance market continues to strengthen and improve because of the legislative reforms we have put in place,” Ingoglia said. 

Since January 2024, 29 companies filed for rate decreases and 44 requested no change, while Florida had the nation’s lowest average increase.

 

Program helps non-custodial parents

TALLAHASSEE – FloridaCommerce announced $7 million available through the Non-Custodial Parent Employment Program. 

Eligible organizations may apply to provide employment and training services that help non-custodial parents gain self-sufficiency.

Funds will be administered through Gulf Coast Jewish Family and Community Services. Applications are due at 5 p.m. Sept. 4.

Eligible applicants include governmental entities, nonprofits, tribal governments and local workforce development boards. NCPEP supports job search, training, parenting skills and financial literacy.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Small Business Administration opened nominations for the 2026 National Small Business Week Awards.

Florida adds 7,300 jobs in July 2025

TALLAHASSEE – Florida’s employment continues to increase, adding 7,300 jobs over the month in July 2025, according to FloridaCommerce. 

Florida’s total private sector employment increased by 118,900 (+1.4%) over the year in July 2025.

The industries that gained the most jobs in July 2025 were the financial activities sector, adding 5,200 jobs; the leisure and hospitality sector, adding 1,600 jobs; and the government sector, adding 1,600 jobs.

As of July 2025, Florida employers have added jobs in 59 of the last 63 months since May 2020. Florida’s statewide unemployment rate was 3.7% in July 2025 and has been lower than the national rate for 57 consecutive months since November 2020.

 

FloridaCommerce sees results with loan program

TALLAHASSEE – Since January 2023, FloridaCommerce and the Florida Opportunity Fund, collectively, have provided more than $250 million in loans and venture capital investments to 220 small businesses through the State Small Business Credit Initiative 2.0 program.

This has generated more than $948 million in matching private investment. 

Florida’s SSBCI capital programs facilitate and expand access to funds for small businesses who would otherwise not be able to receive funding and provide businesses with additional resources to facilitate growth and economic development.

FloridaCommerce partnered with Florida First Capital Finance Corporation and the Florida Small Business Development Center Network on the program.

Post office to reissue a popular stamp

TAMPA – The U.S. Postal Service has launched the Stamp Encore Contest to mark its 250th anniversary and prepare for America’s 250th in 2026. 

The public is invited to vote for one of 25 popular past stamp panes to be reprinted in the 2026 stamp program. Voting is open through Sept. 30 at stampsforever.com/vote, where participants can vote online or by mail. The winning design will be announced in May 2026 at the Boston World Expo.

State announces lower auto insurance rates

TALLAHASSEE – Florida Insurance Commissioner Mike Yaworsky announced a statewide drop in auto insurance rates for 2025. 

The top five auto insurance groups—covering 78% of the market—are reporting an average 6.5% decrease, compared to a 4.3% increase in 2024 and a 31.7% spike in 2023. 

Florida also now has the lowest personal auto liability loss ratio in the nation at 53.3%. Officials attribute the improvements to legislative reforms supported by Gov. Ron DeSantis.

“When the top insurers in the state are cutting rates by up to 11.5%, that’s not just a statistic, it’s money back in the pockets of Florida residents,” Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia said. 

 

Credit Union wins award for innovation

TAMPA – USF Credit Union has won the 2025 Digital Growth Award from the World Council of Credit Unions.

The honor, announced at WOCCU’s global conference in Sweden, highlighted two tools: Flex Pay, a Buy Now, Pay Later option, and Plan Your Purchase, which helps members budget for expenses. 

USF says it is the first credit union in Florida to offer a Buy Now, Pay Later product. Its first use helped a parent pay for summer camp. 

 

Fire chief retires, successor named

PINELLAS PARK – Pinellas Park Fire Chief Brett Schlatterer will retire Aug. 23 after 29 years with the city. Schlatterer joined the department in 1996 and became chief in 2018. 

Division Chief of EMS Andrew Hughes will be promoted to fire chief. Hughes has served since 2012 and led initiatives such as the countywide Computer Aid Dispatch platform and the department’s Peer Support Team during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Hughes, a Pinellas Park native, said he’s honored to lead and build on Schlatterer’s legacy.

TAMPA – GTE Financial promoted Laurie Newman to assistant vice president of general accounting. 

Newman joined GTE Financial in 2007. In her new role, Newman will continue to oversee the account reconciliation and accounts payable teams, with responsibilities spanning A/P functions, daily settlements, general ledger accounts, monthly accruals, payroll entries and daily cash management.

Newman has been instrumental in modernizing financial operations at GTE. She led the successful implementation of a comprehensive A/P workflow system in 2015 and played a vital role in the organization’s General Ledger conversion in 2012. Most recently, she helped launch an Account Reconciliation workflow platform that houses all approved reconciliations electronically, enhancing accuracy, transparency, and compliance.

LUTZ – Lutz Cemetery will celebrate its grand re-opening Aug. 9 under the stewardship of American Legion Post 108. 

The event includes a Purple Heart Commemoration honoring two veterans interred at the site. Highlights include a new digital map, searchable database, and the launch of the Lutz Cemetery Renovation Program featuring Legacy Lane, Guardian’s Gate, Patriots’ Way and the Veterans’ Honor Garden.

CEOs dedicate Habitat home

TAMPA – Business leaders rolled up their sleeves in May to help build a family’s new house in urban East Tampa as part of Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough’s annual CEO Build. 

They gathered July 15 for a dedication celebration.

John Beacham, founder and CEO of Toorak Capital Partners, is one of dozens of business leaders, including representatives from Ajax Paving, Cypress Gulf, and Centennial Bank, who framed doors, fired up power tools and stacked stone veneer to help make the home a reality.

“We have an affordable housing crisis that makes it very important for business leaders to come together,” Beacham said.

CEO volunteers also donated or raised nearly $400,000 for Habitat’s affordable housing efforts.

MIAMI – Tyler Teresa, SBA Southeast Regional Administrator, encouraged urges small business owners, homeowners and renters to prepare for hurricane season. 

The U.S. Small Business Administration offers low-interest disaster loans for physical damage, economic injury, and mitigation assistance. These loans cover everything from building repairs to payroll gaps.

Maxwell ready to serenade in Florida portion of tour

The soulful sounds of Maxwell have lingered on R&B and hip-hop playlists for more than 25 years. And Florida residents can hear those sounds live through The Serenade Tour.  The three-time Grammy Award-winner will perform at the Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood on Sept. 14 and at Amalie Arena in Tampa on Sept. 15.  Maxwell has released five albums since his debut: “Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite” (1996), “Embrya” (1998), “Now” (2001), “BLACKsummers'night” (2009) and ““blackSUMMERS’night” (2016).  His return to touring marks a reunion with Jazmine Sullivan, who joined him on his Maxwell 08 Tour. TAMPA – Chris Distefano is coming back to Tampa Theatre, this time as part of his Chrissy Floridas tour. The performance starts at 8 p.m. March 14.
