Wise extends dengue emergency declaration
TAMPA – Hillsborough County Administrator Bonnie Wise has extended the county’s state of local emergency through Oct. 22 as officials work to control mosquito populations and prevent the spread of dengue fever.
The extension allows county officials to respond more quickly to public health concerns and seek reimbursement for certain emergency expenses.
Mosquito Management crews are increasing aerial and ground treatments after surveillance detected dengue virus activity in mosquito populations across several neighborhoods.
The county is coordinating with the Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County to provide treatments and public education in affected areas.
Helicopters continue targeting mosquitoes
TAMPA – Residents in several Hillsborough County neighborhoods may notice low-flying helicopters Oct. 19 to 23 as crews conduct aerial mosquito treatments to help prevent the spread of dengue fever.
The daytime treatments will target mosquito larvae in standing water in Bloomingdale, Palm River, East Tampa and East Lake.
Crews will apply liquid Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis), a naturally occurring bacterium that prevents mosquito larvae from developing into adults.
The treatment does not harm people, pets, fish, birds or beneficial insects and breaks down naturally in the environment, according to the county.
Treatment areas include neighborhoods between the Hillsborough River and Interstate 4 in East Tampa and East Lake, areas between the Selmon Expressway and Alafia River in Palm River and communities between Bloomingdale Avenue and the Alafia River/Boyette Road corridor in Bloomingdale.
