Rain delays Gaither/Steinbrenner

October 11, 2012 By Special to The Laker/Lutz News

By Kyle LoJacono

The heated rivalry between the Gaither and Steinbrenner football teams got a cold bath Oct. 5.

The pivotal Class 7A-District 7 contest played on the Warriors’ field was delayed until Oct. 8 because of heavy rain and lightning. The Cowboys led 8-0 with 2:14 left in the first quarter when the game was postponed.

Steinbrenner athletic director Eddie Henderson said they wanted to resume the game Oct. 6, but no security was available to cover the contest.

Final results were not available by press time. To see the complete recap, visit lakerlutznews.com and click on the “sports” link.

Gaither manhandled the Warriors before the skies opened.

Steinbrenner recorded –5 yards of total offense in its first two drives, while the Cowboys scored on their second play of the contest on a 43-yard dash by senior running back Josh Bell. Senior wide receiver Marcus Brown caught a pass from Bell for the two-point conversation.

The home team seemed to feed off of the rain. Steinbrenner ran for 10 yards on its second possession and senior running back Kendall Pearcey broke off an 18-yard scamper on a sweep, but the explosive play was called back on a holding penalty.

Gaither did not fare as well in the bad weather, gaining three yards on four plays including two fumbled snaps.

The Cowboys had 50 yards of offense when the game was delayed, while the Warriors had five.
