Cholesterol seminar

The Health & Wellness Center at Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel, 2700 Healing Way, will present “Is Your Cholesterol Putting You at Risk?” on Feb. 16 from noon to 1 p.m.

Dr. Hesham Fakhri will discuss high cholesterol; how too much cholesterol causes risk of heart attack and stroke; symptoms; preventions and treatments.

Admission is free. Lunch will be provided. Reservations are required.

Walking/running program

The Health & Wellness Center at Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel, 2700 Healing Way, will offer a “Starting or Improving Your Walking/Running Program” on Feb. 23 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Guests can learn how to effectively start a program, plan for a new goal, and deal with injuries.

The cost is free for center members, and $5 for non-members.

Alternative medical choices

Congregation Kol Ami, 3919 Moran Road in Tampa, will offer a new monthly class on “Alternative/Integrative Choices in Medicine.” Topics will include approaches for preventing and reversing chronic disease and promoting optimal health and wellness.

The next class is Feb. 16 at 7:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be Sarah Bingham, a nutritional consultant, on why good nutrition and alternatives will help avoid chronic disease.

General cancer support

Florida Cancer Affiliates, 3611 Little Road in Trinity, will offer a general cancer support group meeting on Feb. 17 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Anyone who has been touched by any form of cancer can attend. Refreshments will be served. Reservations are advised. For information, call (727) 808-4818.

Tommy Toothbrush visits kids
Dr. Gregory Stepanski of Children’s Dentistry arranged for “Tommy Toothbrush” to visit schools the week of Feb. 1 to Feb. 8.

“Tommy Toothbrush” is a big, blue toothbrush that teaches local elementary schools, preschools and day cares on the importance of brushing, flossing and visiting the dentist regularly, in a 20- to 30- minute presentation. The program is for pre-kindergarten through first-grade students, and includes interactive songs and props.

Children’s Dentistry is located in New Tampa, but also serves Wesley Chapel, Lutz, Land O’ Lakes, Zephyrhills and Temple Terrace.

Woman’s club learns about heart health
The GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club hosted Mary Webb, club member, retired cardiac nursing supervisor, and professor at USF School of Nursing, for a seminar on “Women’s Cardiac Health.”

Webb spoke about the need to reduce stress and hypertension, and the importance of proper diet and exercise. She also highlighted the different symptoms presented in women vs. men during a cardiac episode.

Each year, the woman’s club highlights women’s heart health in a variety of ways to bring awareness to the issue.

02/21/2016 – The Beatles presentations

“The Beatles: Band of the Sixties,” an hour-long multimedia presentation spanning the music of The Beatles, with audio clips of music and excerpts from interviews with band members, will be presented at these libraries:

  • Feb. 21 at 2 p.m., Jimmie B. Keel Regional Library, 2902 W. Bearss Ave., in Tampa
  • Feb. 24 at 6:30 p.m., New Tampa Regional Library, 10001 Cross Creek Blvd., in New Tampa.

02/20/2016 – Suncoast Stables fundraiser

Suncoast Stables and Riding Academy, 1108 Altamont Lane in Odessa, will host a fundraiser for Saving Grace Equine Rescue and the Suncoast Stables Youth Club on Feb. 20 starting at 5 p.m. There will be a barn tour, horseback riding demonstrations, a grooming station, and a kid-friendly horse movie under the stars in the evening. For purchase, there will be food vendors and face painting. There also will be a raffle for a four-pack of free riding lessons. For information, call (813) 368-0666.

02/20/2016 – Sweet Adelines performance

The Suncoast Harmony of Sweet Adelines will present “The Magic of Music” on Feb. 20 at 2 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church of Hudson, 13123 U.S. 19. 02/20/2016 – Pasco NOW meeting

The Pasco National Organization for Women will meet on Feb. 20 at 11 a.m., in the story time room at the Land O’ Lakes Library, 2818 Collier Parkway. The guest speaker will be Brandi Geoit from the West Coast AIDS Foundation. Pasco NOW meets in Land O’ Lakes on even-numbered months, and in New Port Richey on odd-numbered months. 02/19/2016 – Libraries closed
