U.S. Supreme Court Overturns Roe v. Wade

June 24, 2022 By Isai Rocha

The U.S. Supreme Court overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade decision Friday, saying the constitution “makes no reference” to abortion rights. The 6-3 majority decision on the 1973 ruling argued that abortion rights were different than other rights withheld by the 14th amendment.

“The constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision,” the court’s voting majority wrote Friday. “Until the latter part of the 20th century, such a right was entirely unknown by American law.”

An Interview With Light and Matter Artist Matthew Brandt

June 22, 2022 By Tara Finley

In L.A. Weekly’s recent Meet An Artist Monday, Art Editor Shana Nys Dambrot interviews artist and photographer Matthew Brandt. “Particularly enamored of the rough-hewn and storied lands of the American West, Brandt seeks to describe and transport the landscape’s histories, damages, and glories through his unique photo-based multimedia language,” writes Dambrot. “Brandt is always devising new ways to make all of this clear and inherent in his photographs — large-scale, often fantastically colored and evocatively textured landscapes and portraits — by means of labor-intensive processes from photography’s early days and sometimes physical artifacts of the sites where they were captured.”

An Interview With Tori Amos

June 21, 2022 By Tara Finley

L.A. Weekly’s Music Editor Brett Callwood recently interviewed Tori Amos regarding her new album and its accompanying tour. “Now that the pandemic has lifted, between the tours I popped into the beach house in Florida before it all started – I hadn’t seen my father except one time in the last couple of years,” Amos tells Callwood over the phone. “So I’m in Cornwall for a good portion of the time, but not for many, many months now.” Amos spent the pandemic period in her home in Cornwall, a gorgeous county in the southwest of England. Thankfully, she’s now able to travel and see family, as well as tour, writes Callwood.

Out Of Town Eats: Visiting Sesame Dinette In Long Beach, CA

June 2, 2022 By Tara Finley

Sesame Dinette, a sibling of  Sesame LA market in Chinatown’s Central Plaza, has opened up in Long Beach. Owned by Linda Sivrican, Long Beach’s Sesame Dinette was built with the intention of showcasing the culinary talents of Sivrican’s mother, Judy Nguyen. Designed as an incubator for the Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders culinary community, the concept is a three-generation family affair helmed by not only Sivrican’s mother, but her step-father and daughter as well. It is within this space that the family provides a platform for young Asian chefs and culinary collaborators thanks to their rotating residency program. “My mom found this space,” Sivrican, who also owns a parfumerie in Chinatown, tells L.A. Weekly Food Editor Michele Stueven, from behind the counter of the dinette. “She fell in love with the size of the kitchen. She’s been a professional chef and caterer for decades working in tiny kitchens. This is my first restaurant venture, and we’re taking it easy and slow to start,   the hours and menu are limited. My parents are taking care of the lunch menu from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. For the 8 a.m., and all day menu, I’m using this space as a platform for rotating residencies. We have younger talent coming in and doing things like a coffee program, pastry program, so you have a multigenerational point of view.”

Phil Rosenthal Is On Fire And It’s Delicious, Writes Michele Stueven

June 2, 2022 By Tara Finley

Phil Rosenthal is a man who knows, and loves, good food. It’s an exciting time for the self-described food, as his eponymous James Beard awarding-winning series Somebody Feed Phil debuted for its fifth season this month and the inaugural episode of his podcast “Naked Lunch” goes live this week. Not a man to rest, Rosenthal also has a book slated to be released this coming October that tells all the stories behind the aforementioned hit series. While it may be hard to separate the man from the appetite, Rosenthal is known for much more than his culinary pursuits as the creator of the Emmy-award winning show Everybody Loves Raymond. For those not as accomplished, it really does seem like everything Rosenthal touches receives a Michelin Star, but that’s not exactly the case. L.A. Weekly Food Editor Michele Stueven sits down with the man himself to break bread and share a frittata along with secrets as they rap about the rollercoaster that is success.

John Waters Expands His Twisted Universe With Liarmouth Debut

June 2, 2022 By Tara Finley

John Waters stays true to his delightfully twisted writing style in his newest novel, Liarmouth. Known for bawdy and biting words and turning phrases that are in no way appropriate and therefore absolutely perfect, Waters has been keeping readers titillated for decades thanks to works like Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble, Hairspray, Cry-Baby, and Serial Mom, among others. In this article, L.A. Weekly Culture Editor Lina Lecaro reviews the book and interviews its author to gain insight into the inner workings of a beautiful mind. “It’s fetishistic and fantastical (there’s a psychic talking penis that puts Tommy Lee’s phallus to shame) but also smart, sarcastic and satiric. It makes for a sexy, sometimes cringey but mostly very funny read, and like most of his output, it’s boldly un-PC,” Lecaro writes.
