Home Sweet Home at Bella Home Market

October 12, 2021 By Trevor Lloyd

Between the stock and the staff, there’s really nothing a creative mind can’t accomplish when it comes to home decorating by shopping at Bella Home Market in Lutz.

This locally owned specialty boutique offers a selection of high-end home décor and gifts, in a range of styles with reasonable prices. The store also dedicates space for homemade goods from local creators, such as organic soaps and wall art.

“We keep our product unique,” said Lou Malerba, store owner. “You won’t visit someone’s house and say, ‘I have that same painting on my wall,’ because our gifts are individualized.”

Owner Lou Malerba

Malerba became owner of Bella Home Market two years ago, right before COVID-19. A frequent shopper, he furnished much of his own home with merchandise from the store. He’s grown to love the community whose commitment to shop locally has kept his doors open.

“I’m absolutely a people person, and at my store, customer service is number one,” said Malerba. “People know if they need a unique piece, they can find it at Bella Home Market.”

What continues to set Bella Home Market apart from other home décor stores is its variety of versatile craft paints by Dixie Belle. In fact, Bella Home Market ranks in the top 100 world retailers for the brand.

After premiering every paint color offered by Dixie Belle, Malerba’s success led him to becoming the only store in the Lutz area to be named an Elite retailer. And, as an Elite, Malerba can carry every product Dixie Belle offers. This includes its cherished, original product with stains, waxes and scents, to its newer Silk line, an all-in-one application that works as a primer, pigment and topcoat.

“We have so much fun with Dixie Belle, they are constantly bringing in new products, and folks love them. Plus, they love the paint’s bendability, affordability and best of all, it’s VOC-free,” said Malerba.

(VOCs, or Volatile Organic Compounds, are toxic, binding chemicals found in other paints that give off the signature “paint fume” smell. Exposure to these fumes over time can have dangerous health effects.)

Bella Home Market goes the extra mile to show customers there is really nothing you can’t do with these paints. While most crafters use them for painting furniture (beautiful examples can be found in the store), Malerba and artist Rebecca Buzzeo hold classes every month to showcase the adaptability and versatility of the paint. These classes of individualized, all-inclusive projects tend to fill up fast, especially around the holidays.

“You’ll come, and we’ll show you the process and technique of Dixie Belle. By the end, you’ve learned new painting skills and get to keep a seasonal décor item you created,” said Malerba.

Throughout the month of October, Bella Home is hosting a raffle auction with the lucky winner taking home a themed gift basket filled with great in-store finds. All proceeds from the raffle will go to Moffit Cancer Center to support Breast Cancer Awareness month.

The Double Branch Name Runs Deep In Wesley Chapel

September 21, 2021 By Special to The Laker/Lutz News

Brewer Bob Hunt (left) and co-owner Ryan Clarke at DBAA in Wesley Chapel.

The roots of Double Branch Artisanal Ale (DBAA) run deep in the history of Wesley Chapel, beginning with its name.

Double Branch, named after twin creeks that once flowed through the area, preceded what we now know as Wesley Chapel. It wasn’t until the postal service was established inside a Methodist chapel in the Wesley district, that the name Double Branch was lost.

But thanks to this local brewery, this historical name is no longer forgotten. “We wanted a name that calls back to our community,” said co-owner Ryan Clarke.

During prohibition, the Wesley Chapel area was a refuge for moonshiners. Nowadays, these brewers of old would be impressed with the lineup of 29 taps that DBAA offers. Guests can try entry-level craft beers, as well as drinks on the more experimental side, all of which are rotated throughout the year and handcrafted on site. This keeps things fresh, and allows guests to come back for another love-at-first-sip experience.

“We see what space needs to be filled on our list and we fill it. It’s what we have fun doing,” said Clarke, who has dreamed of owning a bar since he was very young.

DBAA is the only brewery in Tampa Bay to use dedicated laagering tanks, which provide the necessary space and temperature for their pilsners and other lagers. A crowd favorite, the “Grove Gold” pilsner, is named after Grove owner Mark Gold, and is crafted in these one-of-a kind tanks. The pilsner calls back to the essence of our area once again, with notes of citrus.

DBAA also bottles and distributes its beers farther into the community and throughout Pasco, Pinellas and Hillsborough counties.

Outside of what’s brewing in the back, the family friendly brewery offers just as much excitement in the dining room. There’s ample room for entertainment with sports TV and arcade games, complete with a dedicated scratch kitchen. A diverse, high-end menu is not your run-of-the-mill bar food — everything from the smoked brisket to sauces are homemade, boasts co-owner Travis Glenn.

“I grew to enjoy craft beer and I loved the environment, and now we are here. We’re welcoming, we’re open, we have a lot of options, and we really do have something for everyone,” said Clarke.

With strong ties to the community, DBAA is dedicated to giving back by supporting local charities throughout the month with day-long events. The brewhouse also celebrates with its guests holidays and special events, including its upcoming Oktoberfest from Sept. 17 through Oct. 3.

ASAP Pressure Cleaning Keeps The Mold Away

August 12, 2021 By Special to The Laker/Lutz News

By Kelli Carmack

Mold can be a huge problem for homeowners, especially during the summer months when humidity is higher than ever.

That’s where ASAP Pressure Cleaning comes in.

The company not only helps to get rid of mold and mildew growth, it also provides an array of other cleaning services, including gutters and downspouts, screen enclosures, exterior paint prep, fences (vinyl, wood and metal), brick/block walls, pavers, pool decks, lanais and patios, decks and stamped concrete.

“We offer a variety of services, for a variety of surfaces, from soft wash to high pressure,” says owner Austin Batchelder. “We strive to keep your property looking clean and bright.”

Batchelder defines pressure-washing as the use of high-pressure water that is sprayed from a nozzle to remove dirt, grime, dust, mold, pollen and other unwanted contaminants from hard surfaces, such as driveways, wood decks, pool decks, sidewalks and other outdoor areas.

According to Batchelder, the amount of water pressure used depends on what the needs are. Typically, high pressure is used for driveways and sidewalks, whereas soft wash is used on shingles and tiles.

ASAP Pressure Cleaning has been in business since 2012, working with both homeowners and commercial customers primarily in Pasco and Hernando counties.

Batchelder says what sets his company apart from other pressure-washing operations, besides being licensed and insured, is the level of expertise his team offers, and the equipment he owns.

“Our truck-mounted commercial grade pressure- and soft-wash equipment are commercial machines, not just basic units out of your local hardware store,” explains Batchelder. “We also have the ability to bring water to jobs, and can heat water up to 200 degrees for jobs that require very hot water.”

ASAP Pressure Cleaning has both day and night crews, giving it the ability and flexibility to accommodate when the customer needs the job done. Because of Florida’s high humidity, Batchelder recommends pressure cleaning your home every three months to six months to prevent mold and mildew buildup on walkways, decks, driveways and siding.

“I always make it transparent to my customers that my service is repeating. It’s pretty much always going to rain and be humid in Florida, so new mold and mildew buildup will always occur,” says Batchelder. “My goal is to clean and maintain, so that mother nature doesn’t take back over.”

ASAP Pressure Cleaning is currently looking to add more pressure cleaning technicians for both day and night shifts. If interested, call Batchelder at 813-501-2010.

Oasis Pregnancy Care Centers Opens its Doors in Dade City

June 29, 2021 By Special to The Laker/Lutz News

Oasis Pregnancy Care Centers, a nonprofit that offers support to women experiencing a planned or unplanned pregnancy, recently has opened its fourth location in downtown Dade City.

Pete Castellani cuts the ribbon during the grand opening of the Dade City Oasis Pregnancy Care Center, standing between Lora Novak (left) and April Beck (right). They are joined by local Dade City residents and dignitaries. (Katie Fernandez)

The nonprofit, founded by Pete Castellani, got started in 2009 when it opened in Land O’ Lakes. Over the past 12 years, Oasis has successfully expanded into other areas like Wesley Chapel and Tampa.

In late 2020, Castellani got a call from two local Dade City figures about an opportunity for a fourth location.

Randy Huckabee, pastor of First Baptist Church of Dade City, and Larry Guilford, founder of Make A Difference, reached out to Castellani and suggested he take over a vacant center located at 37522 Meridian Ave.

“We brought the idea to our board, discussed it with the church, and low and behold we opened our fourth center on May 11,” says Castellani.

Castellani has been overwhelmed by the success and response he has received in Dade City.

“The whole community, including different organizations, churches, and political figures, has given us so much support. It’s been such a welcoming, friendly, great experience coming into this area,” said Castellani.

As of now, the center is only open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., but Oasis Dade City Director Lora Novak hopes to expand those hours as more people take advantage of its services.

Every service that’s offered to mothers and their partners are completely free, including pregnancy tests, a free ultrasound at less than 22 weeks, and Bright Course lessons that are carried until the baby turns 1 year old.

Lora Novak and Pete Castellani (Nicole Sanchez)

Bright Course lessons, which are in both English and Spanish, educate mothers and their partners on what to expect in their pregnancy, labor and delivery, breastfeeding, and so much more.

Mothers earn points as they complete the different lessons, which can be redeemed at Oasis’ in-house baby boutique filled with new and gently used baby items.

“We provide bibs to cribs, and everything in between,” said Novak.

Oasis stresses the importance of mothers taking time to make their decision on childbirth.

“We always want them to choose life, but that’s ultimately their decision,” said Novak, “We would be there for them for counseling and services in the future, no matter what choice they decide to make.”

For more information on the Dade City center and its services, go to OasisPregnancyCenter.org, or to donate, visit HeartsForOasis.pronetwork.us.

Meet Jaime Bryant, your local GEICO insurance agent

May 26, 2021 By Special to The Laker/Lutz News

Special to The Laker / Lutz News

GEICO, the well-known national insurance company that opened its doors to America in 1936, has opened

its first location right here in Wesley Chapel, with local insurance agent Jaime Bryant at its helm.

Bryant has over 17 years’ experience with GEICO. He joined the company right out of college in 2004 at its Lakeland office, where he worked in a management development program.

“And I just worked my way up from there,” says Bryant, who eventually was promoted to the coveted position of sales director for Florida, which he held for several years.

However, when the opportunity for Bryant to start his own office in Wesley Chapel presented itself last year, Bryant jumped on the opportunity.

“The fact that I was already living here in Wesley Chapel and this opportunity came — it was very intriguing,” says Bryant, “I really wanted this area because of the growth, especially in the housing market.”

The Wesley Chapel office, located in the Northwoods Shopping Center on Bruce B Downs, officially opened right after Christmas in 2020, and had its ribbon cutting ceremony on Feb. 12.

Traditionally, most GEICO members tend to do their business online — either through the company’s website, mobile app or traditional 1-800 customer service number.

But for the members who prefer to do business in person, Bryant and his team invite you to stop by their

office. “Some people want that human interaction and GEICO realizes that.”

The expansion of offices in the last couple years is to make sure we cater to all audiences,” says Bryant.

“We truly get to know you and ask questions to figure out your financial situation, type of protection you need, etc., and then we customize a package that works best for you.”

When you step inside Bryant’s office, you will see an aquarium with two real life geckos, a fun nod to the company’s famous mascot.

GEICO offers a wide range of insurance policies, with its most popular being automobile. However, there’s lots of other insurances the company offers including motorcycle, RV, boat and renter’s insurance.

“We can also bundle your auto coverage with renter’s insurance through the GEICO Insurance Agency, so don’t forget to ask us about getting a bundling discount,” says Bryant.

According to Bryant, the two main things that set GEICO apart are their customer service and competitive

rates. “With GEICO, you’re getting a really affordable policy with great customer service,” says Bryant.

Bryant is a graduate of the University of South Florida, where he earned his degree in Business Economics and his master’s in Business Administration. He is a proud active member of the North Tampa Bay Chamber, and is looking forward to getting more involved in the local community.

For information, call 813-953-4200 or stop by 1227 Bruce B Downs Blvd., Wesley Chapel, FL 33544.

Infinite HD — Experienced Home Remodeling

May 20, 2021 By Special to The Laker/Lutz News

Experienced partners at Infinite HD, Jarred Howard (left), Rob Howard and David Rodriguez.

By Kelli Carmack

Rob Howard got his start in the flooring business 35 years ago as a teenager, when he was working at a grocery store and his manager asked if he could finish the store’s floors when a contractor failed to show.

Rob agreed to help, discovered that he enjoyed the work, and has been in the flooring business ever since.

Over the years, Rob has expanded his skills to include painting, tile work and other skills needed for home improvements, and today works in both remodeling/restorations and new construction.

In 2014, Rob added new partners — his son, Jarred Howard, and longtime colleague, David Rodriguez. The men named their new business Infinite Home Designs, which they abbreviated to Infinite HD.

Infinite HD has grown into a full-service home repair and installation company, with a focus on bathroom and kitchen remodeling, as well as flooring.

A recent trend that Rob has observed is that many people are calling about back porch installations.

“It makes sense. People who are off for the summer, or working from home, want a relaxing spot to unwind. Plus, with it being summertime with mosquitoes and gnats running around crazy, having a back porch makes your summer experience much more enjoyable,” said Rob.

Home repair shows, such as “Fixer Upper,” often inspire people to do their own home repairs, but David Rodriguez stresses the importance of hiring a licensed professional for most home repair needs.

“We have a saying in the business — ‘Cheap labor isn’t skilled, and skilled labor isn’t cheap,’” said David. “It truly matters who you hire.”

Infinite HD has seen its share of cases where people try to do their own home repairs, or hire unqualified people, and end up having Infinite HD finish the job.

“Those clients end up spending more money, time and stress by trying to do it on their own,” said David.

Infinite HD recently moved its office to Odessa to keep up with the company’s growth. The location is convenient to its customer base in Hillsborough and Pasco counties. Rob is excited to watch his company continue to grow and expand.

Infinite HD continues to operate as a family business, which Rob is reminded of every time he steps into the office, because his grandchildren helped install its floor. Having both his son, Jarred, and daughter, Janann, work for him is something Rob deeply treasures – a sentiment his son, Jarred, shares.

“It’s always nice to make those memories with my dad,” said Jarred.

For more information, or to book a free estimate with Infinite HD, call (813) 309-5211.

Hands-On Firearm Training with Hamblen Security

May 5, 2021 By Special to The Laker/Lutz News

By Kelli Carmack

According to data compiled by Small Arms Analytics & Forecasting, nearly 23 million firearms were sold last year.

With this astonishing rise of new gun owners, Garrett Hamblen is focused on promoting top-notch gun safety and responsibility through his firearms academy, Hamblen Security.

“This pandemic has launched the biggest new gun owner surge I’ve seen in my entire lifetime,” says Hamblen. “It’s vital people are properly trained on how to own and operate a firearm.”

Hamblen Security’s concealed carry class (CCW) does just that. This class, which is $59, offers students basic gun safety knowledge and shooting skills, and is a requirement to receive a Concealed Carry Permit in Florida.

There’s a lot of CCW classes out there, but Hamblen believes his classes stand out because he goes the extra mile for his students.

“A lot of other CCW classes are either solely online, just 30 minutes long, and/or the instructors only let you shoot with rubber bullets,” says Hamblen, “Our classes are four hours long and we fire with real ammo.”

Hamblen Security students learn everything from selecting the right firearm, how to handle it, and how to protect themselves and their family. Another important topic taught is situational awareness.

“People always ask me, ‘What do I do if I get mugged, or if my house gets broken into, or if I see someone with a gun?’” says Hamblen. “We go through all different, real-life scenarios and teach you what is the safest thing to do.”

Once a student completes Hamblen Security’s CCW, he/she can continue their firearm training with a follow-up class — Basic Pistol. In this class, the student focuses on owning and operating the correct firearm, and a large percentage of the class is hands-on training and shooting.

“This is the class that’s missing in the firearm world,” says Hamblen. “Most firearm academies don’t offer a follow-up class.” Hamblen Security also offers private classes, advanced classes, gun-cleaning classes and even youth classes.

Preventative training is the primary focus in Hamblen Security’s youth class. It teaches young kids what to do if they come across a gun at a friend’s house, school or playground, as well as how to safely shoot, load and unload a firearm.

“This class can teach kids how to react in a potential life-threatening situation with a firearm,” says Hamblen.

All of Hamblen Security’s classroom portions are held indoors at the Awake Wesleyan Church in Zephyrhills, and the outside training is at a private range in Zephyrhills. Hamblen is double certified with the National Rifle Association (NRA), and is a partner for the U.S. Concealed Carry Association (USCCA).

All are welcome at Spark Church

April 22, 2021 By Special to The Laker/Lutz News

Pastor Garrett Hamblen with his wife, Katherine.

by Kelli Carmack

Garrett Hamblen never intended to become a pastor — in fact, he went to school in his home state of Indiana for his Bachelor’s and Master’s in Business at Indiana State University, graduating in 2012.

Everything was all set up for 23-year-old Hamblen to enter the business world, but right before he graduated, his father committed suicide.

“When I lost my dad, I was really numb to love and life. But God rescued me,” says Hamblen.

Hamblen explains that God rescued him when he moved to Florida in 2014 to be with his brother, who was working at a Christian men’s drug and alcohol program. During this time, Hamblen felt led by God to go into church leadership, and served in several pastoral roles.

For a while, things were amazing for Hamblen. In 2018, he met his now-wife, Katherine, when speaking at a church in Tampa. Fast forward two years later, and the couple was married in March 2020.

And then, just a week into their honeymoon, the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic struck. “When we got back, the world was completely different,” said Hamblen.

While still trying to get used to this new world, two months after the onset of the pandemic, Hamblen lost his job. Scared and unsure of his future in the ministry world, God found a way to speak to Hamblen through his family and friends.

“So many of my loved ones kept throwing out the idea of me starting my own church,” he explains.

So, Hamblen and his wife went to a church-planning training session, and in that moment, the couple knew they had to pursue this calling from God. And thus, Spark Church was born.

Inspired by the phrase “just one spark away,” Spark Church’s goal is to ignite real life change throughout the community. Outreach is one way they are achieving this.

Hamblen and his team enjoy going out into the local communities to share love and hope. Whether it’s going to community block parties, hitting up the local park, or working with nonprofits, Spark Church is here to make a difference in Pasco County.

Seeing lives change is the most rewarding part of being a pastor, says Hamblen.

“We see people who are being abused, cheated on, who recently got fired… they’re in these tragic moments in their lives, and have nobody. We want to be that somebody for them,” says Hamblen.

Spark Church services are held every Sunday at 10 a.m., at the movie theater at The Grove at Wesley Chapel.

Hamblen finds it exciting to have his church located in such a booming area. “We’ve got a big heart for this area,” he said.

The church’s first service was held March 21, and Hamblen is already receiving great feedback.

“Some of the families that have come to our service have told me they’ve been waiting for a different type of church, and they found it here,” says Hamblen.

Something unique that Spark Church offers during its Sunday service is a wristband station. If you choose a green wristband, you are open to physical contact, such as a hug or high-five. If you are more restrained, there is a yellow wristband, and if you do not want any physical contact, you choose a red one. This is just one of the many ways Spark Church implements COVID-friendly practices.

The church also offers a kid’s ministry for children up to fifth grade. Through learning Bible stories, songs and participating in engaging group activities, Spark Church helps spread the word of God to youngsters. All Spark Kids adult team members pass background checks, and safety protocols are in place so parents don’t need to worry while they are in their Sunday service.

Hamblen’s main goal for Spark Church in its first year is to develop life groups this fall. These will be eight-week semesters that provide opportunities to connect with other believers. He also plans to open up a ministry school, which will focus on preparing people who are looking to get into the ministry career path.

If you haven’t been to church in a while, or have never been at all, Hamblen encourages you to check out Spark Church.

“What’s the harm in trying? You might find your new family,” says Hamblen.

Beautiful New Homes at Crystal Lake

April 14, 2021 By Special to The Laker/Lutz News

Skyline St Augustine II

By Kelli Carmack

Nothing beats the feeling of coming home to a place you love. Just ask the residents of Crystal Lake in Zephyrhills.

Crystal Lake is a relaxed, resort-style 55-plus manufactured home community that offers gorgeous lakeside views, perfect for an evening stroll with family and friends.

This community was established more than 30 years ago and today has an array of beautiful amenities, including a heated outdoor pool, spa/fitness center, shuffleboards and fishing ponds. A lively clubhouse routinely hosts community events, such as bingo night, dances and dinners.

“Crystal Lake is more than just streets that have houses on them,” says sales manager Mary Sheldon. “It’s truly a community. People here are out and about on their golf carts, visiting their neighbors, enjoying all our amenities. It’s really a great place for seniors to live.”

Sheldon is excited about the growth underway at Crystal Lake — currently more than 200 new manufactured homes are being added to the community. Two new models have recently been introduced – the Casa Marina and the St. Augustine II – and both are seeing a lot of activity.

The Casa Marina is a 2-bedroom, 2-bath home that also has a den that could be used as another bedroom, office space or craft room. At 1,447 square feet of living area, this floor plan has lots of attractive features, including a spacious front porch, 9-foot ceilings and a raised rear deck off the master bedroom.

Sheldon jokingly adds that the Casa Marina’s rear deck makes residents call it the “Sun Worshipers Home.” This move-in ready model is available for only $94,900.

The St. Augustine II also is a 2-bedroom, 2-bath home with den, at 1,440 square feet. Some impressive features of this model is its spacious open floor plan, huge walk-in closet in the master bedroom, and ample garage. This model has country charm, with a farmhouse sink and sliding farm door leading to the den. This home sells for $145,900, and there are currently three homes available for purchase.

Palm Harbor Casa Marina

Other new models include the Raleigh, Aurora, Silver Springs, Palm Beach, Ashville, Monticello and Vero. All are built with drywall construction and thermal pane windows.

“Our manufactured homes are just as well-built and strong as traditional homes in the market, but come at a fraction of the cost,” explains Sheldon. “Plus, our pricing is fabulous for being in such a desired location.”

Crystal Lake is a land-leased community— meaning buyers purchase their home, but not the land, so there are no real estate taxes for owners to pay.

Sheldon encourages anyone looking for a new home for themselves or a loved one to schedule a private tour with her at Crystal Lake.

“Seeing people move into a new home is wonderful,” says Sheldon, “I help find the right home for the right person. Matching them together is very rewarding for me.”

To schedule your private tour at Crystal Lake, call 844-276-8964. Or, to experience a virtual tour, go to MyMHCommunity.com/communities/florida/crystallake-zephyrhills.

ASAP Pressure Cleaning Experienced, licensed and insured

April 14, 2021 By Special to The Laker/Lutz News

Austin Batchelder & family

Spring cleaning is upon us, and nothing improves the appearance of your home more remarkably and more quickly than pressure washing its exterior walls, decks, screens, fence, driveway and roof.

Hiring an experienced pressure cleaning company that is licensed and insured is important when inviting someone to work on your home. And that’s why many homeowners call on ASAP Pressure Cleaning.

The company has been in business since 2012, and serves customers in primarily Pasco and Hernando counties, working with both homeowners and commercial customers.

“We offer a variety of services, for a variety of surfaces, from soft wash to high pressure,” said owner Austin Batchelder. “Your property is your little slice of paradise, and we strive to keep it looking clean and bright.”

ASAP’s exterior cleaning services includes:

– Gutter cleanouts and downspouts

– Screen enclosures

– Exterior paint prep

– Fences – vinyl, wood and metal

– Brick/block walls

– Pavers

– Pool decks

– Lanais and patios

– Wood and painted decks

– Stamped concrete

It also is an expert at cleaning roofs, including shingle (soft wash), tile, membrane and metal roofs.

Batchelder says what sets his company apart from other pressure-washing operations, besides  being licensed and insured, is the level of expertise his team offers, and the equipment he owns.

“Our truck-mounted commercial grade pressure and soft-wash equipment are commercial machines, not just basic units out of your local hardware store,” explains Batchelder.

“We also have the ability to bring water to jobs, and can heat the water up to 200-degrees for jobs that require very hot water. And, we have both day and night crews, to give us the ability and flexibility to accommodate when the customer needs their job done.”

Because of Florida’s high humidity, he recommends pressure cleaning your home twice a year to prevent mold and mildew buildup on walkways, decks, driveways and siding.

“How often you need pressure-washing services depends on the environment you live in, and because of all the lakes and wetlands in Land O’ Lakes, Lutz and Wesley Chapel, spring and fall is always recommended because of the area’s high humidity,” said Batchelder.

Batchelder is proud of being recognized on Angie’s List with a Super Service Award for the past five years because of its excellent customer service. As his company grows, he looks forward to adding more trucks to his fleet and providing quality jobs to his employees and continued good service to his customers. A native of Brooksville, he is married and has two young children.
